On her hospital bed in the electroencephalogram room at Xinqiao Hospital in southwest China's Chongqing, 33-year-old Yang Fengxia gets excited when hearing her father say words like "hotpot" and "coffee". After being in vegetative state for nearly 10 years, she has regained some consciousness.
Yang Fengxia suffered intracranial hemorrhage caused by cerebral trauma in an accident in 2006. She lost consciousness and slipped into a vegetative state. After 18 months of treatment, Yang Fengxia's condition was stable, so her parents took her home for further rehabilitation. To pay for her treatment, her father Yang Daguo has spent all the savings of the family and is heavily in debt. Every day, Yang Daguo gets up at 5 a.m. and helps her for rehabilitation training, such as pulling her hands to raise her into a sitting position.
In April 2012, Yang Fengxia's mother passed away from a complication related to diabetes and in May 2014, Yang Daguo received an operation for stomach polyps. Since then, his health condition was not as good as before. However, he never gave up on his daughter's treatment.
According to Liu Shiyong, Deputy Director of the Neurosurgery Department at Xinqiao Hospital, Yang Fengxia has regained part of her conciseness, which has much to do with her parents' persistent training and care. However, her brain is still severely damaged; it will take further rehabilitation for her to fully come round.
