Shuidiaogetou (Prelude to the Melody of Water)
June 1956
Mao Zedong

Having just drunk the Changsha water,
Now I eat the Wuchang fish.
The long broad river I swim across,
Extending my eye to the wide sky of the South.
Let the wind blow and the waves beat,
I feel this better than having a leisurely yard stroll:
What ease I'm enjoying today!
By a stream Confucius did thus say:
In this manner all things pass away!

Sails move in the wind;
Tortoise and Snake remain stationed;
Great plans come to mind:
A bridge will fly across from north to south,
And turn the chasm into a road smooth;
Stone walls will stand in the waters west,
To block clouds and rains from Wushan's crest,
To make a placid lake 'tween cliffs steep.
Should the Goddess be not ill today,
She'd marvel at the world's new array.
