With Australia becoming the Asian Cup Champions this had me pondering, with such a small nation where soccer is clacked as a third rate sport makes this achievement more spectacular when put into presctive with three other football codes dominating the domestic football market. Australian Rules, Rugby League and Rugby Union are the codes that dominate.Soccer being the poor cousin plays its games in the Summer because it cannot compeat against the major
Australia would be a powerhouse in the soccer football code is it could  attract and retain talented players from the other codes.

The game is called Football, only uneducated Americans call it soccer and call a game which they use hands football.

There is no way Australia will ever be major player in football. Football will be dominated by Brazil, Argentina, Italy, Spain, Germany, Holland and France and maybe some other South American or European team.

Why? Because that is where the best players play and it has football culture, investment and tradition. It is very difficult to increase football support in Australia when the best games in Europe are played in the middle of the night.

People all over the can watch and love football, China, Thailand, Korea, Japan or even Australia and Finland.

Soccer got its name from AsSOCiation Football, after it was codified in Britain.
Presumably this was initially to distinguish it from Rugby Football which split from the Football Association in a disagreement over rules of the game.

In Australia there are four types of Football played, Australian Rules, Rugby League, Rugby Union and Association Football (Soccer).

The use of a separate term to distinguish Soccer from the other codes of Football is not unreasonable.

In the USA where a game is played where the foot rarely comes in contact with the ball, and the game consists mainly of replays and analysis, rather than any actual sporting action, it could be considered an exaggeration to refer to "football" as that game where people dress up in padding and simply throw the thing at each other.

It should also be noted, that of the five types of "football" mentioned, Soccer, Australian Rules, Rugby Union, Rugby League and Gridiron, that only one of these games awards the maximum points for a score, when the ball travels through the goal as a result of kicking with the foot and no other interference.

Each of the other games, full scores can be made without the foot going anywhere near the ball. Only Australian rules maintains that the FOOT must kick the BALL for the maximum score to be awarded.

When you close 3 old people homes and on the same day give yourself 27% pay rise does not go down well. I think the last election Eas a protest vote, this one is the same.
