The game is called Football, only uneducated Americans call it soccer and call a game which they use ...
Soccer got its name from AsSOCiation Football, after it was codified in Britain.
Presumably this was initially to distinguish it from Rugby Football which split from the Football Association in a disagreement over rules of the game.
In Australia there are four types of Football played, Australian Rules, Rugby League, Rugby Union and Association Football (Soccer).
The use of a separate term to distinguish Soccer from the other codes of Football is not unreasonable.
In the USA where a game is played where the foot rarely comes in contact with the ball, and the game consists mainly of replays and analysis, rather than any actual sporting action, it could be considered an exaggeration to refer to "football" as that game where people dress up in padding and simply throw the thing at each other.
It should also be noted, that of the five types of "football" mentioned, Soccer, Australian Rules, Rugby Union, Rugby League and Gridiron, that only one of these games awards the maximum points for a score, when the ball travels through the goal as a result of kicking with the foot and no other interference.
Each of the other games, full scores can be made without the foot going anywhere near the ball. Only Australian rules maintains that the FOOT must kick the BALL for the maximum score to be awarded.
