I only read negative news about China on the US website: Pollution, underaged Olympic athletes, tainted foods, and of course communism! From those of you who have been to or lived in China, do you think the American media portray a real China? Is there anything missing?

Hm... to which 'US website' do you refer?  CNN?  Fox News?  CNBC?  The American Free Press?  People's World Weekly?  There is much to find if you are curious to look.

How real is China's media portrayal of America?
Each country has it's own perspective on other countries.
Politically controlled media outlets are trying to portray view of other countries.
An intelligent person knows not to believe what he/she reads without checking other news sources and making a guess as to the real message behind the news.
very often the easiest thing is to distract peoples attention from problems at home by focusing on other countries and blaming them for things.
it is all about controling hearts and minds

Look at how america is portrayed on these forums,  its about the same both ways.

Yet the Chinese persist in their love and desire of America and the Americans persist in their loathing and disdain of China.

Most western news on China is negative and even if the news itself is not negative it is portrayed a ...

On a movie that should never have been made. Imagine America's reaction if Korea - or worse: some Islamic country cooked up a plot, however comedic to assassinate the American president?

Whereas American media portrays China with a decidedly malicious slant - the smog, poor working conditions, poor manners of tourists/travelers, China reports on America's doings more in the tone of: 'they really shouldn't be doing that'. America condemns outright and China strongly urges.
Therein lies the difference in reporting.
P.S.: the Chinese do their public image more harm than anyone else by behaving 'badly'(by western standards) and by voicing their mistrust of their government and industries.
