Peng Liyuan, a native of Yuncheng County, Shandong province,  is a renowned Chinese contemporary folk singer and performing artist. She is the wife of current Chinese leader Xi Jinping, and as such referred to as the "Chinese First Lady" by the media. Peng was born in 1968 as the eldest child. When she was little, she used to follow her mother traveling around villages to give performances.

Peng showed her vocal talent at a young age. She first performed nationally and came to fame during the earliest rendition of the CCTV New Year's Gala, a widely viewed mainland Chinese television program that airs during the Chinese New Year in 1982, when she performed On the Plains of Hope.

When studying in Shandong College of Arts, Peng was taught by soprano Wang Yinxuan. After graduation, she was admitted in Soldier Singing and Dancing Group of Jinan Military Area. Later, her beautiful voice won her a chance to be a part of friendship performance tours to six European countries.

Afterwards, she continued to pursue her study in Chinese Conservatory of Music and became the first in China to obtain a Master's degree in traditional ethnic music when the degree was established in the 1980s. The most unforgettable experience to Peng is when she performed for frontline soldiers in 1985 in Laoshan, where her own brother was fighting.
