The smirk must've been sincere! Reporters' questions can be ignored if you know how. Xi knows how. Obama does too; but can't be as obvious as Xi. They must've laughed about it together later. I'm very impressed with Xi. But NOT because he has any problems playing "western games". In fact, when you really study him, he is quite "western" himself. Like Chou En Lai was.

"Mao Zedong was hugely respected for... slashing the level of poverty and hunger in China"

Ahem.  ...

Let's be fair. Mao was no economist. He didn't realize that the "Great Leap Forward" and the "Cultural Revolution" would cause so much havoc and starvation. He was just a politician. The general drift of his other policies did create an urban industrial class at the expense of the poor people in rural areas. But, seeing threats from both the US and the USSR, this was the best thing to do. Stalin did the same in the USSR. It's what enabled the USSR to defeat the Germans in WW II. It's been a very HARD world!

PS: Mao was never my favourite Chinese communist. I always preferred Chou En Lai. And my all-time favourite communist is good old Ho Chi Minh. He lived frugally and was very, very smart. Even Fidel Castro collected sports-cars. None of THAT nonsense from "Uncle Ho"!

I'm curious Mr. Zhu. Are you really a retired PLA officer (as your avatar suggests)? If so, despite your hard line, you deserve some respect. Tell us about your career. This is a friendly site.

I'm retired and had a rudimentary experience with military-grade firearms in the late 1960's (the Belgian FN, the Sterling SMG, the Bren, the Sten) - all as a reservist. Horticulture is beyond me. Even growing vegetables in my garden here in chilly Ottawa Canada. I like to talk with people whose opinions are not the same as mine. Very occasionally, I'm persuade to CHANGE my opinions. I'm 72 years old. Glad to meet you.
