anywhere when development under way...pollution, deforestation sure exist...but China did well after that...
large part of forest in China is not to deforest...its in the policy..

I am getting ready for a short film about expatriating to China, and would love to hear any stories or anecdotal experiences which you would like to be considered adapted for a film with a "Thank you" credit.   Topics I am interested in are - modern hospitality, gambling, after-work events, drinking stories are always fun, sports, and popular activities.  If you prefer, email me confidentially at

I think like so many others here, China is far more free for the average person than I expected. The quality of life is much better than we are led to believe in the USA. The food is delicious though I didn't know what to expect before coming here about food. Traffic is chaotic compared to the west. I didn't expect it to be like it is. I did expect the schools to be much more organized than they are. Our impression of Chinese people is that they would be very disciplined and very organized. And, even though I was aware of the pollution problem, I thought it would be much cleaner than it is. Overall, my impression of China has been very good. The people have been wonderful to me. Very kind, helpful and considerate. I've had a few negative experiences of people trying to cheat me out of money, but the majority of people are very honest and fair. I plan to stay here for many more years.

My expectations were shaped by my relatives who visited China during the 80s and 90s. China was extremely poor at the time and everywhere my relatives went, they were treated like royalty by the mainlanders. That gap between the Overseas Chinese and the Mainland Chinese was HUGE. So when I first visited China in 2007, I thought there would be lots of poor people dressed shabbily riding bicycles all over the place. Instead, I've met Chinese entrepreneurs who wear the latest European fashions, flaunt their gold Rolexes and drive BMWs, Mercedes Benzs, Audis, Bentleys, etc.

Over the last five years, I've visited Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an, Dalian, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hainan, Xiamen and Quanzhou. What impressed me most was how different China was from the stereotypes that the world has of China. For example, the Chinese entrepreneurs I've met are almost 100% apolitical: they simply don't care about politics. What they're concerned about is improving their skills, learning from the world and expanding their businesses.
