What was your impression of China before you came here?

In 1982 I was in a queue for an interview to be selected for China scholarship. My classmate was also in the line and told me dont go to China,its like a prison.I asked him what the hell you are doing in the line?He left.I was among the three been selected for China out of 46 interviewed.I read about peoples commune and red guard during 70 when communist party was banned in Bangladesh.Red books are sold secretly.I had some collection the content was not understood by me being a school boy of 8 grade.I was moved by socialistic way and work during night time secretly.All are equal attract me greatly.I was interested to live in a commune and take part in daily work.Finally I came to Beijing and found the whole picture is different.No my dream and expectation were not fulfilled at all.But its a great opportunity to see how a dark city enlighted  overnight.I felt it was badly needed for the people who struggle a lot in their life.
I still prefer China to live in until I die.

Ni Hao,
I am presently working about one hour north of Chifeng in Inner Mongolia Wudan. I've been here in China now for about seven weeks. Base on my countries government (Canada) and media I was first expecting communism to being right in your face. Also rules and more rules.  This country is nothing like that.  I feel more freedom here than I do in Canada.  I rarely see police.  The city is very clean. People are very helpful and friendly.  The people don't just take a glance at you they take a long hard look and I break the ice by clasping my hands and saying Ni Hao.  I figure they are very curious because they probably haven't seen to many white men in person.  I've had more than fifty people ask to take a picture with me.  I've been given all kinds of fruits as gifts.  One restaurant owner rolls me a Chinese cigarette every time I pass by.This country is booming and very dynamic.  On the surface,
I have only good things to say about China.  Xia xia.

China is still a communist nation.
You should leave your cave more often.

One of my American friend told me he thought China would be more antiquated and there would be rickshaws. And everyone did kungfu/tai chi.
