MY STUDENT, CHOSEN AS A LEADER AT YALE

Lucy Mao, one of my long-time students' mother, here in China, contacted me today to let me know something. Her son, my student, is Gary Mao. His father is one of the top level, city leaders here in Zhengzhou, a city of 12 million people.

About two months ago, just before I left to go back and visit my family and friends in Texas, Lucy, Gary's mom, invited me to dinner with her and Gary. We went to one of the nicest restaurants in this city. In fact, it was a 'members only' restaurant (a first for me in China).

The reason for the dinner is to let me know that Gary, a recent high school graduate, had just been accepted into a program at Yale University. We had a great time celebrating his achievement.

Well, now, August 11, he is at Yale in an orientation program with other international students. Students from all over the world including Dubai, France, England, Switzerland, Finland, Indonesia, China, Japan and many others. There were about 300 students his age there.

Out of the 300 or so students, they had to choose a leader for a project they are to complete. The criteria was to find a person fluent and eloquent enough to be their spokesperson. Well, you know who they chose, don't you?

Of course. They chose Gary Mao, my student.

Gary is helping round out the list of Chinese students that we've been able to help place in the top schools in America. He is our first student to get accepted to Yale. We've already had one who was accepted (and has now completed) into Harvard Medical School, another one who is starting her third year at Princeton, another who gained acceptance to Johns Hopkins, and a few hundred more who are all in the top 3% of universities in the USA.

We are proud of Gary for not just 'getting in' to such a school, but, to be chosen as a leader based upon his English speaking skills.
