Just A Girl

Recently I watched an old movie Notting Hill. I have long heard of it, but never got the chance to watch it. I know it’s an old movie, and the storyline is indeed very straightforward—boy meets girl, and despite the differences between them they finally get together and live happily ever after. Compared to the plots in modern love stories or even better, the Korean shows, where twists and turns such as lies, cancer, car accidents leading to amnesia, dogged parents who are hellbent on keeping the couple apart, and conniving people around them, this movie is not complicated at all. In fact, it tells a simple story where a couple loves each other, but is hindered by reality.

Nevertheless, I still shed plenty of tears watching it. What moved me most was when Anna said: “I’m also just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her.” Love in essence, is just two people loving each other, without consideration of any other things, like fame or appearances. Somehow we tend to forget about the essence all the time. When we meet people, we judge them by their educational background, physical appearances, family background, wealth, job title, income, age, siblings, etc. We ask them about what they have, instead of who they are. Since when do our material possessions in this world define us? We certainly cannot bring them to the grave. It is the things that cannot be seen that is truly valuable and precious. It is the invisible things in a person that we love and want to live with for our whole life. What if the world says no to you? What if everybody around you thinks you cannot possibly be together? What if similar cases in reality never end well? But so what? You are the ultimate judge of your own happiness. Others may fail but it doesn’t mean you will fail too. If you really love deeply, you will find a way. There is always a way. It’s just that you have to make sacrifices and live with it.

Nothing is too hard to overcome if your love is strong and true. All the worldly things don’t matter when you really love the person. So when love strikes, don’t let the trivial things stand in the way. The most important thing is to look into your heart, and ask, “do I love this person for who he/she is, and only for that?”

I remember a poem I read years ago, which will serve as the perfect ending for this article:

“It doesn’t interest me what you do for a living,

I want to know what you ache for,

And if you dare to dream of meeting your heart’s longing.

It doesn’t interest me how old you are,

I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love,

For your dreams, for the adventures of being alive.”

Yes, one example of a good film without sensationalism, car chases, violence and bad language; just a good plot acted out well with a good and amusing script.

Yes. It is the emotions behind that move people.
