Let's Break the Barrier!
Popularity 3|||
Recently, due to my assignment I had an opportunity to keep intimate contact with foreign students in our university.
About half a month ago, I was informed to make a documentary of any theme. Coming up with the idea filming the foreign students in our campus, I began to embark on making a documentary about their life, especially how they spent Christmas in China.
Firstly, icebreaking is crucial. Since I acquainted no overseas students in our campus, the most key point is to let my filming plan publicized. So Imade an exquisite poster and posted it on the wall of foreign students building with my phone number attached. However, days later I received no reply.
So plan A has failed; next comes plan B! Next few days I strolled about their teaching building and plucked up my courage to strike up a conversation with them. To my surprise, I stumbled upon a Brazilian guy called Luan who is very pleased to accept our filming. OK! Well-begun is half done!
In the following days, we became good friends. He acquainted me with his friends and I found most of them are from South America. It seemed not only Chinese overseas students like to be grouped together, so does any country’s foreign students due to the common culture backgrounds and this sense of reunion must be obvious typically when they study in another country alone.
How will foreign students spend their Christmas? Party certainly is indispensable. At the beginning I thought there were at most less then ten students from South America spending Christmas together, however later around thirty students all came, not only from South America but East Europe and other areas of the world.
They made food, chatted with each other and danced crazily in a small dormitory. Sudde nly someone turned off the light, and only music was keeping bustling! Someone hold a torch with green lumia and instantly the dormitory has became a boisterous but awesome pub! Swirling among stream of people, dazzling at green luminous light, bombarded with clamorous music, I could strongly touch the pulse of foreign students burning hearts and dynamic living attitude.
Usually, on occasion of this kind most Chinese are too shy to merge themselves into the crazy atmosphere. Not willing to stretch limbs dancing,they usually tend to feel uncomfortable when they are asked to join the party. So I tried to shake off my shyness and immersed myself into the unparalleled Christmas Eve I've ever spent.
Apart from party, the most touching moment would be Secret Santa---gift exchanging. Everyone has prepared gift in advance for their classmates in secret. And on that Christmas Eve, they spontaneously circled around. Person who prepared the gift stood in the middle and declared the person to whom he or she would like to send the secret gift. Affection was expressed; hugs were witnessed; cheers and tears were clearly sensed.
They are from different countries with different lifestyles. However, in the darkness through laughter I intrinsically felt the intimate relationships they had and the sincere friendships they shared. Maybe they had barrier in languages in lifestyles, however it is melting and now they are closely bound up with each other.
Sometimes barriers exist not only among foreign students but also between them and us. From my observation, when we see them passing across us, most Chinese students turn a blind eye on them or show their desire to speak English with them but eventually gave it up. So and it seemed an insurmountable river between Chinese students and them. Actually, I guess it's because we usually don't dare to open our mouth to talk with foreign students for fear of making mistakes.In fact, they are so nice and hospitable. We should communicate more.
Now my documentary has almost finished and we became very good friends. Through chatting, I got to know many foreign students show strong interest towards China. Some of them even are exceptional in martial arts. And a girl's dream turns out to be a teacher of Chinese character! And they are extremely happy to make Chinese friends. So let’s break the invisible barrier and bridge the gap between each other! You’ll find emotions are universally common without national border.
