The Revenant

The first time I knew this movie was a post from my friend in Wechat. She believed that Leonard should be able to finally win a Oscar by his stunning performance in this movie. And he did win it. Then I thought I should spare some time to watch it.

But I soon totally forgot that as I got myself drowned in all sorts of triviality. However, it was soon mentioned by more people in my circle of virtual friends . I suppose it was because it just got released in mainland of China. The friend who uploaded the first post was studying abroad.

I finally went to see it last night with a friend. We arrived at the cinema five minutes after it had already started. So we missed the very beginning, which was a pity. I sneaked into the screening room in pitch black. When I was focus on finding my seat, a sudden gunshot started me. My heart almost leaped out of my chest.

The first scene I saw was the one when they were attacked by people from another tribe. Leonardo was washing a bear (not 100% sure. It seems like a giant animal with black fur.) But I didn't see what is coming next in the movie---all the bloody and barbaric scenes.

After it had started for about 10 minutes, I thought the guys who had despised and had underestimated Glas would see with their bare eyes how he rose as a hero in this movie. I even reckoned he would turn out to be the new leader of his tribe to revenge against other tribes who invaded their land and killed their people. Of course, I was wrong and the plot didn't go as I had expected. (I think I am just used to watching heroic blockbusters from Hollywood.)

The following scenes unveiled a journey of Glas being tortured until the very end. He was first attacked by a bear, then witnessed his son being killed and abandoned by his people. He just lay there with sever wounds all over his body and exposed to the bloody cold weather.

He was on the verge of death many times in this movie.

In spite of the fact that I have never taken to movies with bloody scenes, I like this movie on many different levels. I love the breathtakingly beautiful scenery, the crystal clear water in the river, the pure white snow and the vast clear blue sky. But in my very personal opinion, the epic natural scenery is just a contradiction to how dark humanity can be.

Yes, this is a movie regarding humanity, its good sides as well as bad sides. Tom represents the most evil aspect of humanity. He could kill one of his man without even blinking his eye. He could abandon his people without any guilt. He could also convince himself to stay with the seriously wounded Glas because the excellent prize offered to him. He is probably the worst you can imagine of a human being. However, when I dig deeper, I can't bring myself to furiously hate him. Because I imagined if I were him, I would probably seize the first opportunity to abandon Glas too even though I might not kill Glas's son or steal money from his captain. It's just when people are cornered, they will do whatever it takes to fight back to the center again. In this movie, they instead have to fight for survival.

Tom reminded me of the drunk guy in the book 'To Kill a Mockingbird'. (Sorry for referring to him as this. I don't remember his name.) He accused an innocent black man of raping his daughter even though he knew it was his daughter who seduced the black man in the first place and in fact nothing happened between them and even though he clearly knew his accusation would very likely end the black man's life because at that time, black people were treated as people inferior to white people. The black man died in the end. The drunk guy even went after the lawyer's children and tried to hurt them as the lawyer defended the black guy in court. From this sense, they seem to share a lot in common. Both this ignorant guy and Tom are people whose conscience don't seem to bear any scar even after killing innocent people.

But as I mentioned, there are good bits about humanity in this movie. When Gals was starving,he encountered with a guy from another tribe who generously shared food with him and allowed him to ride horse with him. He even went length to find herbs to treat Glas's wound. Glas's captain and Bridger seem to be upright guys. Bridger was tricked by Tom and left Glas behind while the captain got killed on his journey of revenging against Tom. Glas himself is very nice. He is pretty tolerant exemplified by his behavior he showed when being challenged by Tom.  He even saved the girl raped by a malicious man.

But, being kind doesn't necessarily mean ending up well. He guy who built a shelter for Glas got hung and died miserably. But Glas's kind deed in the end saved his life. I reckon we are supposed to be kind not because we want to be offered a helping hand when in trouble but because we want to live with a clear conscience.

Another lesson I learn from this movie is that we should have beliefs, being they religious ones or superstitious ones. This is because when we truly believe in something, we can become unbelievably powerful. With the beliefs, we can surmount almost all the stumbling blocks in life. Glas survived because he desperately wanted to kill Tom and because of his belief that a person should hold on whenever there is a slim chance.

I can finally understand when people were preaching their religions to me in Australia, they all seemed to be very surprised when I told them I didn't believe in anything supernatural and I didn't believe in any religion.

haha its the only reason an otherwise mediocre movie is now famous. If di caprio wasn't in this movie, it would not have made anywhere near as much money

haha, I am not quite sure whether most people watch it because he won the Oscar. But some people did watch it before he wining the Oscar. And at least I didn't really go to see it because of Caprio. I am not really his fan. I went to watch it because I heard it was good. It is in my opinion way better than the movie I watched recently- Batman VS Superman. I suppose I am just tried that type of heroic blovkbuster.

Is it really a very mediocre movie abroad? When I was watching it, I thought it was at least not a movie which wasted my time. And yes, indeed a lot of people came to watch this movie because they just loved Caprio. During the process of watching the movie, I could see a lot of people in the screen room impatient. They seemed to just want to get it over with. A lot of them constantly checking their mobile phones.

I done a blog on the mobile phone checking just last week., that's a Chinese phenomenon haha. I seen this during every movie I have went to see at the cinema here.

It was an ok movie, not bad but I didn't think it was fantastic either. Just...a bit too much blood, not a lot of story. A lot of critics in the west really gave it negative reviews. (a lot also gave it positive reviews though, not everyone thinks it was mediocre)

One of the things you have to remember, films are subjective. I wasn't a big fan of the film....doesn't mean I am correct

It is really nice of you to say so. Thank you! I am not very comfortable sharing my personal opinion online as I oftentimes take others' comments too seriously.

I think I am gonna go check your blog on mobilephone checking during movie-watching

I used to care a lot what people say, but then I realised some people just come on here to annoy you.

Detach yourself a bit from online comments, don't get offended when someone says something really rude as:

1. They are trying to get a reaction from you
2. They would never ever dare say anything like that in real life
3. The possibly may even agree with you but disagree with you because they find it funny

Just ignore such people and keep on writing!

It is actually emotionally and mentally healthy to have nursing homes for old people in residential areas, and makes it easy for families to visit their elderly relations regularly.
Death happens to everyone and it is stupid to hide it away. Death is not bad luck - it will happen to you and me.
In some European countries there are homes for the elderly next to kindergartens, and everyone benefits from interacting with each other on a daily basis.
The elderly benefit from interacting with children and keeps them mentally alert, whereas the young learn about death as a normal part of life.

For a country that supposedly 'respects' their elders, China has a very superstitious attitude to death and dying.
where i am from, the elderly are allowed and supported by family and state) to be independent and in their own homes.
Where medical treatment is needed, residential homes allow the elderly appropriate facilities in towns and cities while their families can visit easily and local residents can interact with them.
In addition, local communities benefit from being able to interact with these residents and the residents can still be part of a local community, not hidden away as something to be ashamed of or 'taboo'.

Shame on China for such medieval superstitious attitudes regarding death.
Does China 'respect' the elderly so much that they should be hidden away from people's lives?

Do you want to be isolated and hidden away when you are old and your family don't want to or can't visit you?
