Proposing to your teacher, can you do it?

Today’s Chinese people enjoy much more freedom than those living in ancient China. One of the free rights today’s Chinese citizens have is marriage. In ancient China children’s marriage was decided by their parents, while today it is in their own hands. Never before in ancient China should a male student propose to a female teacher, for there were no female teachers that time. But even though there had been, students would have been forbidden to do so. But today this student-teacher love occurs frequently, and even a happy result can be expected.

According to ifeng.com’s report, on the evening of June 6, one senior student majoring in marketing at The City College of JL JU proposed to his beloved teacher after their three-year long march love. Students at the college blessed them in unexpected warmth and sincerity. The photos are not very clear indeed, while one can discern that the teacher proposed is smiling. This says she is happy and satisfied.

However, such proposals are still rarely seen at universities. Although university marriage has been approved by the law of China and gradually accepted by Chinese people, successful examples like this are not many due to various reasons. I was a college student myself and fell in love with someone like many of my alumni had done. Our experiences have told us if college marriage needs to upgrade to marriage, it needs perseverance, sincere love and money. As for student-teacher marriages, I had heard of one failed example at my college. A female student loved her teacher, and such a relationship was strongly against by many people. Alas! They finally parted like many other college students.

I am not sure whether the three conditions I listed in the paragraph above have been gained by that male student, I can only think this is a happy ending and needs our blessings and applauses. So far, apart from this one, the only successful result I can think of is the marriage between Lu Xu (one of the most brilliant Chinese writers living during the Republic of China) and his wife, who was once a student of Lu Xu and always appreciated his brilliance in literature and teaching. They finally married and had their children.

Nevertheless, examples like this are not many, although I hope more and more college students can do so based on their sincere love and trust. Maybe some say this is the popularity of the new era, but I think if it is benign, it should be popularized and accepted by us modern Chinese youth.

I was in Zhejiang when I saw a street opera like this. It was very interesting to see a Chinese opera on the street for free. There was a pretty big crowd there, but I could still see the play. It was days like this that made the Chinese culture so interesting to me. Unfortunately I didn't get to share it with anyone, this was before I used Wechat. I liked how you could enjoy special treats for only 1 or 2 yuan, and even gamble a little bit.
