In ancient China people had used copper coins for some period but which were uneasy for carry on a business-trip. Each round copper coin had a tiny square hole through which you could pass one thread. The top of 贯(guan) looks like one coin plus a thread. The bottom of word is 贝 which means ‘seashell’:It is said the shells were the earlist ‘banknotes’ in the world. So in Chinese 贝 mostly refers to ‘treasure’.
You can easily carry one thousand of coins with a thin rope for shopping. One 'guan' is equal to ‘one thousand’ that is similar to the English word ‘dozen’.
