A walk on dream - 九寨沟

When you see the Yak with their long coat of hair, you know you are approaching the cold mountains of Jiuzhaigou.

Seeing the snowy mountain from afar brings anticipation and wonder of what it'll be like up there.

Finally in Jiuzhaigou. First stop was the premieval forest with its massive towering trees. With the thinning air in there, breathing starts to get a little bit difficult.

Forgot about my breathing problem when I saw this bird up close. With the soft light of the forest, it looks magical.

And then I saw the crystal clear water of a beautiful lake. With not many people that morning, we felt so alone with nature then.

With the wind so still, there's a soft reflection of the mountain on the water from where we stood. And I stood reflecting on the wonder of nature and joy of making it here. Perhaps a new life in the making.

Staring at where the mountain and the lake meets the sky, I wonder how will my future unfold. It seems so near and yet so far.

Looking at the fluttering of the prayer flags in the wind pointing towards the mountain, maybe that's what I need.

I wonder if I had come in winter, would the waterfall look like that? Maybe the bright cheery spring is better for the soul than the dark dreary winter.

At least in spring you'll get to see the joy of a wedding by the pristine lake. The flowery beauty of summer with the joyful union of couple does spread a sense of happiness around.

A slow stroll, sounds of a running stream and the cool mountain air makes for a perfect day. No wonder sages in ages past seek with live up where the clouds are.

From the trickle of stream, soon it became a thundering waterfall. Would love to sit under the waterfall and feel its powerful splash.

On the way out, I saw this image of a mother and child. I wonder how much different is their life from life in the city.

Soon it's time to leave. And accompanying us out were the yaks again; just like how they welcome us in.

So-called "Xinjiang"'s landscapes are extremely varied, ranging from alpine mountains (Mt. Bogoda, Tianshan etc.) clad in a mantle of firs and beeches, to grassland (Jungaria) to the deserts (GObi, Taklimakan) and oasis towns (Turpan, Kumul, Kashgar). You can get the feel of Swiss mountains, Saharan desert and Mongolian steppe.

I have been to so-called "Xinjiang" around a dozen times. It is fascinating because it is NOT like China proper; it has less uniformity and a lot more open spaces. The less Chinese it looks, the more authentic it is. Unfortunately, Urumqi is mostly a Chinese city that looks like a replica lifted straight out of the eastern sea board.
