Children from a kindergarten in Xiaru Village in the county of Litang, southwest China's Sichuan Province, have had access to trilingual study since September 2017, thanks to the help of a grassroots official.

On September 1, 2017, Ren Min, Party secretary of Xiaru village, had the idea of teaching children English at the opening ceremony of the village's kindergarten.

On that day, a new teacher at the kindergarten said that they would be able to offer Tibetan, Chinese and English teaching if they could find an English teacher

Overhearing these words, Ren thought that she could serve as a part-time English teacher for the children. For one thing, she graduated from a teacher's college, and for another, she has long been interested in education.

Later, she shared her idea with the kindergarten teachers, who were happy that she could make such a decision.

Since then, the kindergarten has been offering trilingual teaching to children. Apart from the normal bilingual study, children there have one English class each week.

Ren mainly teaches children to sing songs about English letters and speak in English to help them get exposed to something new and see a bigger world.

"During my early teaching, I sometimes had sympathy for the children who didn't even have any toys to play with. When I taught them the word for plane in English, they asked me what a plane was like. If there was a model plane, they would immediately know what I was saying," said Ren.

"That's why I always have pictures of the objects involved in my teaching on the blackboard," Ren continued.

Luckily, this kindergarten has earned support from different sectors in society. Ren, together with other officials who work in the village, has solicited many teaching supplies such as books and stationery worth over 2,000 yuan from different channels for the children.

On October 9, when she was giving class for the children, Ren received lots of neatly folded letters from the kids, which bewildered her.

After opening the letters one by one, she saw many drawings, including airplanes, trees, flowers and hearts. Some of the letters also had English words on them.

At the sight of these pictures, Ren shed happy tears, knowing she had won recognition from her students.

This kindergarten has 25 students. When seeing visitors, they can greet them in Tibetan, Chinese and English.

"Our kindergarten is not inferior to those in the towns," said villagers proudly.

"Besides financing the kindergarten, we will organize teachers to receive regular training to improve the quality of preschool education in the village," said a rural official.
