Culture Shocks in Cross-cultural Communications

Popularity 5Viewed 10530 times 2013-5-16 20:38 |System category:News| necessary, searching, yourself

Be your own friend or know yourself, as put by an ancient philosopher. However, searching our own heart is not always  a bright way to know ourselves since lack of communication with others will make us self-indulgent and even lost in finding and pursuit of our own goals. So, communication is necessary and essential.

As an English major, I had some inter-cultural contact with some foreigners in college ,which finally turned out to be reflective mirrors to my own culture and thinking modes. And I have to admit that I have been cultivated in common Chinese culture despite my specialty and the passion for foreign languages learning. As a result, cultural shocks occurs in our communications. Here are two examples .

When I was at college, I made friend with my foreign teacher, a non-typical but adorable  American young man. Even after graduation, we still keep contact with each other. We were true friends, and I appreciate his thinking and talents.  Despite his sincere belief in religion, I have some belief in Taoism and Confucianism, but not in Christanity. When he proposed  to a sweet American girl, I have sent my sincere wishes. when they got married, I failed to send any present to the newly-breds and my husband and I both considered it awkward to deposit money into the given accountant since we two couples were in different countries at that time. Then, Daniel and I are out of touch. Sometimes, I am wondering whether he regards me too mean to be a friend. Who I thought would be my friend forever has been out of my life.

Before graduation, I had half a year mutul-teaching experience with a Japanese girl who  studied Chinese in the university. She taught me Japanese and I taught her Chinese, and sometimes English became our working language since we both are not adept in the other party's mother tongue.  She was very admiable and polite . We got along very well. However, after three months' contact, her politeness was still kept, and then I got a clue that  we were not still friends.

Every culture bears its own traits just as the different personality of every one. Culture shocks happened when there traits were unearthed or when they were regarded against each other. An English user as I am, I am still deep-rooted in Chinese culture, and often thinking in Chinese styles. Maybe I am lack of the international inspective.

The cultural shocks will continue, I know, and I also believe, something , such as humanity can transcend culture stereotypes and help us find true friends in the global village regardless of race, nationality, gender and ages.

Your young friend David might be occupied with his new wife and
I haven't found the Japanese to be very warm and sentimental for the most part.
You'll find a lot of "what's in it for me" in the west when trying to make a true friend.
I've made many good acquaintance but only a few good friends. Maybe you should learn to be satisfied with
acquaintances and not worry so much about making good friends.

That's nomal. Even between chineses, we would not find the original warm friendship befrore if we haven't seen each other for a long time! Everything is changing, nobody would stop in the same place!

His name is Daniel.I hope they are leading happy life somewhere on the earth. Since true friends are just a few, it is a pity to lose one for ever. Acquaintances are OK, who may walk in or out of our lives without too much notice.

Every culture has its own traits just as the difference in thinking by every one. Culture shocks happen generally when the traits are unearthed or when they were regarded against each other.Being sometimes of different culture makes you l deep-rooted in varied cultures. The cultural shocks could l continue on basis of humanity can transcend cultural stereotypes and help us find true true companions across Globe regardless of ethnicity, gender and ages.

fluteyi: thank u! All I want is to share my true ideas and thoughts with friends as well as myself. Sometimes, writting helps us think more deeply.
It does. And sometimes it brings on a joke! Anyway the pen should be mightier than the sword. Then I thought, but it is hard to fight someone with a humble pen - unless I squirt some ink in his eye. But nowadays we are writing with computers. Hit someone over the head with a 15 inch laptop should do it!
