Is China a money-oriented society?

Popularity 5Viewed 5763 times 2013-4-24 21:32 |System category:Economy| China, money, price, count

I'd like to count how many times money has come to my mind, out of my mouth, today.
First, when I cook for lunch, the price of garlic sprout presents in my mind, 11yuan per kg. I compared it to the price of eggplant, 7yuan per kg and got  an idea about a good bargain.
Afternoon, I went to the bank to withdraw some cash to fatten my thin wallet, and I  knew where they would leave for. Then, I worked to earn today's bread. On the way to home, I talked to my co-worker casually.  We talked about the will-be falling price of petroleum and then money was naturally brought to our chat. She said, nowadays, we regarded  money as everything and the wealthy men were powerful. I had no words to refute.
At dusk, I chatted with a new friend, who was a native English Speaker, and he uttered a concise conclusion of this topic, money talks.  After supper, I talked to Dad, he said most of us were money-worshiped and money turned society bad. He concluds China is a money oriented society now.
Really? I cannot agree with you, Dad. And I am afraid all the arguments about money above will reach no agreement from the bottom of my heart. Money really counts as we cannot live without it every day. But money's power lies in its usage so does its evil aspects. It is not money that has brought negative aspects of society , which many elders detested and complained. It is the ever growing desire hidden in every human's mind that has been aroused by the using of money to exchange what they need, what they want and what they dream of.
China is a developing country,in its rising age. Pogresive, ambitious as it is , China endeavors to develop economy. So money is often mentioned and put in the first place. However, no matter who is concerned, an individual or a nation, money is not an end goal, but just a tool in the capitalist society.
We are hard-working, to earn money and to spend money, for what?  For a comfortable living ? For a fruitful life ? To guranteen a safe and happy life for family? To prove ourselves?  .... .... As long as you get an answer in your mind, you are the master of money.
Then we do believe China will develop its economy in a money-assisted way rather than money-oriented blind pursuit.

Why you need money for spiritual fulfillment ????. So you are saying if you play a soothing music on a bose 5.1 with arabian mattress and a gold status of budha in front of you so that you can get fulfillment..
please ..Just admit that your dad is right...people do anything and everything for money and then make excuses that it is just a tool to take care of my family and material/ spiritual fulfillment....

The problem with this theory is money can't fulfill any spirituality. They are opposites. Mother Teresa, Ghandi and others preached this throughout their lives.

China is a society of greed. Their only goal in life is to make money. Just take a look at the youth for a clearer picture of what this society has become. Look at the surveys done and point to a money oriented society. Look at how parents teach their kids the only thing that matters in life is money. Parents, bosses, academians, all of them preach "money is the measure of success". It is rare to hear a Chinese talk about hobbies, self fullfillment, doing good deeds for society, real love (not convenient love for money or materialism such as a house), donating, volunteering, giving back to society, sharing the wealth, nothing. When you have a society that thinks "I'd rather cry in the back of a BMW than to smile on the back of a bike" you're on your way to losing all sense of humility and direction as a human being. in China, money rules. Maslow's hierarchy of needs concept has been replaced with the G word - GREED. And, when you add in corruption, you have a dysfunctional society that has adopted Machiavelianism, top to bottom.

You are saying the sensual enjoyment based on material fulfillment exchanged by money? maybe it is ridiculous and arrogant to consider money as a tool to reach our goal and meanwhile we are manipulated by the avarice increasing with wealth. of course, money is not the goal of life, since, money alone cannot make us happy and fulfilled, then, I come to know it is only the support of our material livng. And the capitalist society put much emphasis on money , as may be partially due to it also a relatively unbiased tool to measure an individual's contribution and competence, instead of clan  privilege in feudal society.

You are really thinking critically, yet only dark aspects has caught your attention? Thank you for pointing out the problems and I have really come to know my wrong cognition and inacurrate expression. First, I come to know the idea that money can used as the tool to achieve any fulfillment is totally wrong , which is in essence a sort of money-worshipped thinking. Forgive my shallowness! Second, What I mean by saying "Money has become a convenient tool to reach personal fulfillment, materially &spiritually." is closely related with the social standard for success. I think in the peaceful time, the heroes of times are among the businessmen, who can adopt their IQ, EQ, or XQ, to create wealth. So the successful men achieved not only wealth but also high prestige, which may bring some spiritual fulfillment. One point should be noticed that wealth should be accumulated by our own hands and brains, which can be self-proven.

The problem is: It's not. Wealth in China is created on the backs of labor (see my post "Where does weath come from". Also, there are few, if any, original ideas created in China. They simply copy, pirate or steal someone else's ideas in order to gain wealth artificially.

fluteyi: thank u! All I want is to share my true ideas and thoughts with friends as well as myself. Sometimes, writting helps us think more deeply.
It does. And sometimes it brings on a joke! Anyway the pen should be mightier than the sword. Then I thought, but it is hard to fight someone with a humble pen - unless I squirt some ink in his eye. But nowadays we are writing with computers. Hit someone over the head with a 15 inch laptop should do it!
