Learning a new Language

Popularity 10Viewed 16169 times 2016-10-6 22:56 |System category:Life| learning, journey, another, effort

The journey of learning another language adds so much to our lives. It is definitely more than worth the effort.
The two best tips i have been given are

1) study and practice everyday - no matter how busy you are you can find 15 minutes to listen to an audio file
song, messages, sitcoms in your language of study
(while on the bus, train or plane, walking, doing household chores or exercises)

2) Practice what you know today - Don't wait till you think you are ready,  speak it today & every day
you are as ready to speak as you will ever be until you start speaking it.
It takes you out of passive learning and puts you in active learning.
Don't worry what others will think, the smart ones will congratulate you for your determination and drive to grow.
     Your fun will begin

I got these tips from Language Hero  - Kevin Moorehouse.

So true. I practice my putonghua a half-hour everyday, and especially now that I have taken up taiji with straight-sword exercise a half-hour a day. It is very fun and healthy.

Thanks everyone, feel free to share any tips you have found that work for you.

I am also doing the following things

1) Study currently using Du Chinese app for iPhone and Android devices that allow the user to select conversations based on language skill level (like basic, intermediate advanced) and select words from the phrases in the conversation to add to their vocabulary.  The words selected can then be seen in a test allowing to initially just see the Chinese Characters.  Then you can expose the pinyin,  and a sentence using the word in Chinese Characters, and then the option to see the English.

2)   Various courses that I have purchased I revisit to refresh my memory of what I have learned

3)  Attempt to write a message to someone that I normally talk to on Wechat in Chinese and use a translator to translate back to English.  Then refine it either in English or Chinese until I can get the translation to say the same thing in both languages (or close enough)    Then I send that message in Chinese to my Chinese friend it was intended for.  When I get confident i sometimes skip the translation step , but include my  intended message in English.
This works with some friends who will correct my mistake and tell me how a Chinese person might say what I was trying to say.

4) Listen to songs  or conversation in Chinese.
a) while awake to just hear and train my brain to interpret the sounds I am hearing and parse out the words where possible with my skill
b) When going to sleep with a pair of ear buds, to relax me and expose my brain to the songs.

Thanks,  Yes it is a great idea to exercise both the mind and the body, in a conscious way every day.   The length of time is less important than the devotion.  Even if we do 10 minutes some days we are making a commitment to growth.
