What can American culture learn from Chinese culture?

Popularity 13Viewed 9839 times 2013-5-23 03:21 |Personal category:Cultural Differences|System category:Life| Chinese, culture

Please don't get into government issues here. I'm talking strictly about common, everyday cultural things.
Some things I noticed that I really like about Chinese culture that I wish we would incorporate here in the USA:
  • Incorporate more exercise into everyday life. For example, when sightseeing, I noticed there are no elevators in China. It forces them to climb stairs more often.
  • Consider peoples' pride before responding. To me, the Chinese take this to an extreme with letting people save face. But it would be a good thing if we did it a bit more. Just be a bit more considerate. For example, at work, when my boss messes up, instead of pointing it out publicly, maybe pretend to make the assumption that it was some other factor than his laziness.

Certainly, there are many of you out there who have observed the cultural differences much more than I have. I'd like to hear from you.

It is likely that we western people over-generalize about Chinese culture. I have known Chinese individuals who are just as rude as westerners. It's an individual matter.

I have to say,,,LOL,,,usually, there are no elevators in some areas just because they dont have enough money~~~~~just a joke !
By the way ,in china, if the house is more than 6 floors, they must have elevators.

That's probably right. I think we generalize a lot; we like to categorize things in our heads.

First is totally wrong! Normally Chinese love elevators and escalators. Listen to the complaints on the Great Wall!
Second is partly true, in many cases it leads to lies and complicating social life

Your first point: The Accessiblity legislation is not a basic issue yet, so minorities as seniors and disabled enjoy still no top priority, unfortunately. It will change for sure. And yes, it is also a matter of money. First, let the masses enjoy sightseeing, later the rest. The Great Wall? Maybe the UNESCO does not like modern equipment near world heritage sites…?
Your second point: I agree, although a good portion of diplomacy is nothing new in the west.

The building without elevators is less than 8 floors. That's right, chinese people pay more attention to other's face, But many boss made a wrong decision because of staff save face for their boss, this kind of culture is right or wrong depends on where it is in.
