How did Chinese people in the Qing dynasty learn English?

A textbook dating back to 1860 collected by a citizen in southwest China's Chengdu may give us some clues. The book was written years before the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) was born, so our ancestors had to find their own way of representing the sounds of the English language, with methods as simple as using Chinese characters to stand for the phontic signs. Does that method ring any bells?
