Do you think members of cross-culture family need to know more than 1 language

There are a lot of cross-culture families in world, and most of them use English or most popular language as their common language in Home rather than their native language , In my view, that is a shame when you do not know your partner's native language, even your second language is good enough to express your mind in important time, still there are still something lost between two individuals.

"still there are still something lost between two individuals."

I agree! Communication is very important in a marriage, for me at least. A common language in which both are fluent is necessary for a good marriage, imho.

It sure would be nice to be fluent in Chinese but try as I might I can not hear the tonals. It was easier for my wife to learn English and we are very patient with each other when we do not understand something. I am making sure our child is at least bilingual if not trilingal. I am going to have him lean Spanish in school.

I also have the same problem with the tonals, my wife knew some English so was easier for her to improve her English.
