2013-3-10 08:26
A wonderful article here on ChinaDaily said that spending for education increases annually by about 20%. As a foreign teacher here, I'm wondering how it is spent and what are the results. You can spend more money without being effective. One of my biggest questions is this: Why do children in the USA go to school 2-3 hours less each day, have very little homework, no weekend classes and still excel in education in comparison to most Chinese students? Now, in my humble opinion, Chinese students ...

Daily Miracles in China
About a month and a half ago, I was at McDonalds at Jian She Road and Tong Bai Road here in Zhengzhou, Henan Province. I was almost finished eating when another foreigner walked in. He ordered his food and got it and went and sat down. I said 'hi' and really was in a hurry to get somewhere far away. But I went over and talked to him. He asked where I am from and I told him. I first saw this English Corner when I would take the K9 bus to teach at a ...

One day I got on the bus here in Zhengzhou. I'd been here maybe 3 months. Of course, being in Henan, almost everyone is staring at me. They don't see many round eyed foreigners here. I really didn't know how to ride the bus so I always sat in a seat near the front. This time, there wasn't very many people on the bus. An old man was sitting across from me staring at me. I smiled and said, 'Nǐ hǎo.' He spoke back to me. Then, the bus stopped and a (Chinese) man with very big and round eyes g ...

My Life In China
Last week, I celebrated 1.5 years since I came to China. It has been an amazing experience and one that will continue for some time to come. During that time, I've learned a lot and changed a lot. What have I learned from China, Chinese people and Chinese culture? 1. I've learned to 'let it go'. Big lesson for any Westerner. We aren't good at doing this. Chinese people are. 2. I've learned that most of the time, the agenda is, 'there is no agenda.' HA! Seriously. Very difficult for us Western ...
