Smashing Mobile Phones
Recently, there was a news article about a school in eastern China that was taking the students' cellphones and smashing them to pieces. Destroying something that cost their parents a lot of money. Destroying something that could be used to advance education in an amazing way. I was contacted by a well known international news organization and asked to weigh in on this action and write a series of articles for them. The exact question was, 'How can cellphones be used to educate students?' I ...

Share The Story of Jeremy, Can Your Child Go To Harvard? Part 2
2017-8-12 00:19
When I arrived in Zhengzhou on August 25, 2011, I planned to stay a year. I was going to go back to my comfortable home in the USA and just chalk up another wonderful place I'd been to the more than 20 countries I'd already visited. However, after just one month, my eyes were opened to something that I didn't expect. It has caused me to stay here more than 5.5 years now. I was working with a company that provides foreign, native English speaking teachers to Chinese schools. This company had a ...

Share Can Your Child Go To Harvard? Part 1

Victoria (her English name) was just 14 years old. When I met her, she looked older. She certainly acted more mature. She came to the Binhe Park English corner where I taught free lessons every Sunday morning for 3 hours. She always stood in front. She took in everything I said. She took notes on every word that proceeded from my mouth. One day, her mother showed up. I'd seen Victoria there for almost 2 years. I'd never met mom or dad. They asked if they could talk to me. Of course, Victoria' ...

Share Great News For Foreign Teachers
2017-6-12 09:59
Perhaps I should say, 'Great news for foreign teachers who can tolerate the pain of getting their visa.' The visa requirements in China for foreigners is becoming intolerable for many. I hear from young teachers or, teachers who have been in China a short time, the nightmare they are facing getting their visas renewed. The new policies don't make much (or any) sense to us, but, you have to follow them if you're going to stay here in China. Last year almost finished me off as a teacher in ...

Share Managing People In Your WeChat Group Successfully

A lot of people have asked me lately how I manage so many WeChat groups and get my message out to so many people. I'll share a few of the secrets I've found in getting your message out to a lot of people. Presently, I have more than 6,200 people subscribed to my public account and at least 10,000 more in various groups. Some of the groups are my groups. Others are English language learning groups where I've been invited to share my free English lessons. I also create short videos that are viewed ...

Share Luckiest English Teacher In China

Every day, I hear people complain about so many things. I am an optimist. I'm also a realist. Will Durant, the very famous American philosopher once said, "History has always been on the side of the optimist. Especially American history. History proved him right." I know it is very cliche to relate a positive attitude to the saying, 'glass half full' (rather than 'the glass half empty'). But, your perspective of life is predictive of what you get from life. I arrived in China on August 25 ...

Share Your Child's Success Or Failure
2017-4-9 07:04
A few days ago, I put out a notice to my 6,000 plus English students who follow me on WeChat. It was a story that was inspired by one of students, Jeremy Hua. Jeremy started learning English from me when he was in the 5th grade of elementary school. He started in a big class of more than 20 students at the Zhengzhou Affiliated Primary School near the old campus of Zhengzhou University. I really didn't get the chance to get to know him well until 2 years later. By that time, I had created ...

Share The Daunting Challenge of A Foreign Teacher In China
2017-3-11 04:41
I came to China in 2011. Nearly 6 years ago. I had no plans of staying here longer than a year. I was newly divorced and really had no reason not to come and experience this wonderful place. After being here only two months, I saw the huge obstacles of students trying to learn English. It was very easy to see many of the mistakes and reasons why they often spend 10 years or more and never really get past the ability of having even one simple conversation. I knew I could help. Students c ...

Share Common English Mistakes
2017-3-8 10:52
I'm sure I've written on this subject in the past. But, after 500 blogs and several other news outlets that I write for, I can't remember when. This past weekend, I was a judge once again for the national CCTV English competition. I was reminded of the common problems that Chinese English students make in speaking English. I'll share with you several below. 1. Wrong pronunciation of the word, 'usually'. I've heard this word pronounced wrong in Guangdong Province as well as Henan Province. ...

  • Avoid This Kind of English Training 2018-3-15 05:05

Liononthehunt: A very interesting phenomenon is that most students in Eastern Asian countries, in particular, China, Japan and South Korea have all notoriously under ...
In my experience, what holds back English education in China is that their is no foundation of learning to speak the language. Speaking is fundamental and foundation in language learning. It is rare here in China. I find it interesting that most Chinese primary and secondary schools do not teach Chinese grammar. Yet, they focus 90% or more of their time teaching English learning grammar rules. An effort in futility from my experience of teaching more than 4000 students and thousands more students.

  • Chinese Students Will Conquer English 2018-2-8 01:21

Until the Chinese change the methods used to teach English by Chinese teachers and get rid of 99% of the poor foreign teachers. Maybe 5% of the Chinese will master English.Maybe. Taliking how and actually doing it are very different.
