My Chinese Dream As a Foreigner

Popularity 5Viewed 1305 times 2017-4-19 14:56 |System category:News| Chinese, Dream

I have been asked repeatedly by Chinese friends why moving to china and what made me settle down here. My answer is always, I myself don't know how and why. After graduating from high school, I was sent to china as a full scholarship student to attend my undergraduate studies. Because I believed that for every human there is not but one home. I have never thought about spending the rest of my life in china or envisioned that I will set up a family and settle down. As they say that everything happens for a reason, so I just let nature took its course. All I had in my mind was just returning home after accomplish the mission that I came for which was only the bachelor degree.

Well, the wind goes against the will of the ships. During the graduation project, my supervisor advised me to apply for Chinese government scholarship to peruse my post graduated studies and he provided me with all support needed, I did as he advised and continued my master program. A year later I got to know my then girlfriend who later became my wife. My life was full except for lacking a platonic touch in my life. She became the other side of me and I completed her. I found my beautiful side in her and my life became empty no more.

Despite of the happy life that we are leading, there are still a lot of challenges ahead. Kids' education is one of the biggest challenges that we are facing. Yet, we don’t have any kids but my wife is telling me that kids' education will be a problem since she is not local nor own a house in shanghai. House hold registration system (hukou) makes it very hard for kids to go to local schools. I realized that local schools first enroll local students then students whose parents own a house and finally other kids if they are fortunate enough to have available seats.

My Chinese dream that every child should be given a chance to be enrolled in any school despite of their "hukou". This system makes it a troublesome not only for parents but also for children.

Please note that, 'China' should have its first alphabet in upper case or capitalized form, because it is A PROPER NOUN. Show respect! Thanks!

I am in similar place regarding kid's education - but we live far from hustle and bustle of first tier cities, and my wife at least has hukou in the same province where we are settled, so I am optimistic of hukou reform progressing far enough or us otherwise managing our child's education in that respect.

Bigger concern for me is probably the content of that education - whether it (combined with what we can teach at home) would be on par with what the kid would get abroad, and whether we can avoid our kid becoming assimilated to Chinese doctrination and instead learns to think for himself despite having Chinese primary education.

Could you please restrict your commenting to topics you really do understand, and refrain from writing about things you are clueless about? You do not know what an "alphabet" is, so your advice was useless. And rude.

Do you really envisage enrolling your future child in a Chinese elementary school? Think very hard about this. Would you want your child to be deprived of life and kill his or her time for the next 9 years just to conform to society's norms?

That is a hard choice my friend  ! Sometimes , for some people they just want to provide their kids with the education that they can afford which is not very appropriate for a child as far as I am concerned.....

My wife hopes our son will attend school overseas. She ought to know why. She is a teacher herself.

Please note that seneca could not read, write, listen, speak and understand standard Chinese language for unknown reasons. Clear sign of jealousy and great fear that your future child could master Chinese language well and be better off!

I don't think that it's necessary to understand Chinese or master the language to give some suggestions or advise someone about their children's future!!
