What Does Families Means?

Have you watched the American TV series called Desperate Housewives? I have just finished watching it. As for me, what impressed most in the Desperate Housewives is the idea about families: there is nothing more important than families. They are the ones who show up when we are in trouble, the ones who push us to succeed, and the ones who keep our secrets.

Families are the ones who show up when we have difficulties. In the TV series, taking Gabrielle as an example; when Carlos's eyes were blind and went bankrupt, she didn't divorce with him to seek a wealthy husband. On the contrary, she made her earnest effort to take care of him and his families. Frankly speaking, Our Chinese people also attach much importance on families. Such a typical phenomenon is that they engrave on their mind that one ought respect the elderly and take good care of children. To speak in a specific way, we can always see that when we have knotty problems, families always comfort and encourage us not to give up. What's more, if one have difficulties in doing something, they are prone to turn to their families for help at the first time.

Families are the ones who push us to succeed. In the TV series, setting Lynette as an example, When Tom felt lost about his life. Lynette always encouraged him and offer chance to him to show his talent. At last, Tom seemed got somewhere in his occupation. Given that we feel hesitant about something, families always give appropriate suggestions. Sometimes, it is the advice leading us to success. Personally, considering all the aspects, I always hesitate to make a decision. But, my mom always tells me to catch the opportunities. Yeah, it is her words enlighten and guide me.

Families are prior to everything. However, we often hear someone complain about their families. Currently, things happened around me made me astound. An old person who is almost 90 years old and has no families are willing to live with her. In the past few days, she had backache and she had no choice only to commit suicide, which astounded everyone. People rebuke his sons. What a pity!

Families often give the best things to their children, In other words, we ought to return to them we they become older. Spring Festival is approaching. Have you planned to stay with your families for a few days? Anyway, we people should cherish the relations, which is intangible treasure for everyone! What do you think so?

I think you should not rely on TV programs for knowledge.
This TV program simplifies family dynamics purely for entertainment.
Most families are much more complex than this.
By meeting and interacting with real people, much more can be learnt through observation and experience.

Families can be the cause of great happiness and support, but at the same time can be negative and controlling.
like any relationship, respect and love should not be demanded, but earned or given willingly.

Any mature person, no matter what their age, knows that ALL relationships need time and work if they are to be maintained and grown. It should not depend on one person to do the work, but both.

As you have mentioned, families can be negative and controlling. Actually, sometimes it exists. But the core value of families for Chinese is that respecting the elderly and taking good care of the young. Parents have contributed a lot to the growth of their kids. When parents grow older, returning to them can be taken for granted.

to be honest, I don't know any family in Europe or North America that will emotionally blackmail or bully a son or daughter to get married.

I don't think this is a very respectful way to treat a family member.
I would consider that very negative and controlling.

First a grammar hint: the noun "family" means a collective, not a single individual. It stands for the whole of your parents and siblings, and sometimes the two sets of grandparents as well plus uncles and aunts. In general, though, itis father, mother, sister(s) and brother(s).
Each family is a microcosm full of individuals, who show their relative autonomy to varying degrees and sometimes are predators against other family members. What you saw on TV and what many can see in the series "Family Album USA" is a sanitised version of the ideal family. Take it as a MODEL but do not expect to see it in real life.
It is the same with Chinese families. The need to look after the family's odest does not necessarily come from the bottom of the family members' hearts. It is a legal necessity enforced by tradition and peer pressure. How many people actually try to avoid it?
