The Chinese idiom “业精于勤”,mandarin pronunciation yè jīng yú qín, means excellence in one’s studies is from diligence. The idiom comes from Han Yu’s essay Advice on Learning (《进学解》), which says “业精于勤,荒于嬉;行成于思,毁于随”. (Excellence in one’s studies is from diligence while indulging in much fun desolates one’s learning; success is achieved through deliberate thought but ruined by casual attitude ).

The author Han Yu ( 韩愈)(768-824)was a great writer, thinker, philosopher and statesman in the Tan Dynasty. He was a champion for the classical literature movement at his times. Another popular couplet of Han Yu is : “书山有路勤为径,学海无崖苦作舟”(A mountain of books can be tatolly finished  by hard studying ; the boundless sea of knowledge can be approached through endeavoring sailing.) The couplet comes from 《增广贤文》(Augment the Virtuous,a book which was compiled in the Min Dynasty, collecting various proverbs, idioms and adages from past to that time).

The above idiom and the couplet are often used to encourage people to be diligent in their study and work. They tell us that no pains, no gains. If we want to obtain excellent achievements in our studies and work, we must pay great efforts.

I like this idom especially in winter, as there are a lot of wheat planting in my hometown, western Shandong Province. Auspicious snow can bring a good harvest to the farmers. :)
