China's Food Safety Concern

The NPC Standing Committee has just reviewed the the food safety situation in China after the implementation of the food safety law in October last year.  The report card makes for poor reading, with red ink all over.  There are still many areas that fall short of the law.  For instance, the use of 'gutter oil', made from food leftovers collected from restaurants, is still prevalent, and a major concern for consumers.  Others include the misuse of pesticides in farming, artificial additives in food preparation, illegal rearing and slaughtering of pigs without health checks and certification.  Pig carcases can often be seen transported in non-refrigerated trucks, vans and open air motorised bikes in the scorching summer heat!  By the time they arrive at the market, the pork is already half rotten, and pose a health risk.  No one raises a hue, neither the law enforcer nor the consumer!  It's a shame that the law does not require meat to be transported in refrigerated trucks;  either that or, if there is a law, it is ignored with impunity.

The Chinese consumers have to shoulder some of the blame for this sorry state of affairs.  They don't demand food hygiene; they accept and gobble down whatever rubbish the hawkers and restaurants dish out to them, often in filthy surroundings, sharing their food with flies, and with rats and stray dogs and cats scavenging around their dining tables.  And they order food to be delivered to their workplace from illegal food outlets, with food prepared in the filthiest of conditions, often next to toilets!
Chinese consumers and food handlers don't know what hygiene is; or if they do, they don't take it seriously.  Restaurant chefs have often been seen entering toilets, and after doing their business in there, go straight back to the kitchen without washing their hands!  And those who do wash their hands, do so in a cursory manner, without proper scrubbing to get rid of the dirt!
Many irresponsible dog owners even carry their pets into supermarkets, directly contravening public health laws, with the managements turning a blind eye!  Other customers even go forward to admire and  pat the filthy dogs, not realizing the health risk involved!
Chinese consumers should not be screaming out loud about food safety unless they take an active part to improve the situation.  They should boycott dirty food outlets and report infringements to the authorities.  This is the only way to force offenders to change their filthy practices.

Yes a shocking state of affairs which contributes to many health problems in China and will be a burden on future generations if it is not tackled now.

Yes indeed. The Chinese consumers don't take responsibility for their own food safety, often deriding foreigners who point out their lack of hygiene and food safety sense.
Does it shock you that meat is not transported in refrigerated trucks?  I can't get over this one; always puzzled whenever I see an open-air scooter transporting pig carcasses in the scorching sun!

    In reality, the government officials might not all have been schooled in mandarin, especially for the older ones.
    Do all the officials in the US speak with the same so-called General American accent? Have you never heard the twang of the southerners on US TV channels when interviews are conducted between reporters and government officials? I bet not.

    To some extend, it is true that some people think it fashionable to have a western name, but in most cases, the western names they have are just an extra name like a moniker for fun, and they would not discard their original Chinese names, which are still the only valid names on their ID cards and passports.
    Most Chinese employees of foreign companies with operations in China are usually required to adopt a western name similar to an alias or stage name, that will be officially registered in the company's roster electronically,  just for internal communication's sake (Chinese names are sometimes too hard for the foreign co-workers to pronounce.) However, to my knowledge, more and more new recruits of those companies, particularly the millennials, reject this requirement outright, and insist on calling them Gu Tao, Xiao Yu, Ling Xu, etc.
    Things are changing.
