Book Review: Call of the Wild

Dating back to high school, I had read a book written by Jack London. That is called Call of the Wild. Today I reread it and started to understand more than I had in high school.

The lead role is a dog called Buck. Finishing up the whole book, we could get the clue as to changes in Buck. At the very beginning, Buck is well-civilized as a dignified dog around his living place. But then one of his master's servants exchanged him for money to pay for the debt with a man in red sweater, literally a dog trafficker. The red sweater made Buck docile by hitting heavily on Buck with a club and by not giving Buck food and water. Then Buck was traded to another man on the way to the North. The man was going to the North with his mates for the yellow metal there. Buck was brought to pull a sledge with other dogs. The environment there was extremely tough. The first time Buck experienced losing privilege over other dogs. He had to learn about everything when he lived with other dogs if he didn't want to be treated badly. On the trip, he learned the law of club and fang. When the club came to him, he knew he had better behave in compliance. He had to protect himself from other dogs' attacks with his teeth. The story isn't very long. So here I am not going to give all the summary of it to you.

What I desire to share with you is about how Buck changed from a civilized dog to a wild one. Most of people would say it is up to the severe environment. They could be partly true. But that isn't clear enough for us to understand the changes. I found that Buck was traded several times. Though he learned the lessons of law of club from his masters, he was always in compliance to all of his masters. But when he recognized his master was attacked by American Indians, he sprung to kill the enemies violently. Seeing his last master dead, Buck came back to the call of the wild. He accompanied with wolves, living in the valley. People near there were afraid to walk across the land for fear that they would be attacked by the violent but intelligent wolf with different features.

Buck once loved a human being--his last master, Thornton. His death left Buck resent with human beings and helped resurrect the wildness in Buck.
