Dangal

The day I watched Marvel's 'Guardians of the Galaxy' was when the movie 'Dangal' started being shown in the mainland of China. If I had known it was such a great movie, I would go to watch this instead. The Hollywood blockbuster is lame on many levels compared with this Indian movie.

People on social networking websites started lavishing praise on this movie as soon as it was shown in cinemas. I finally got to watch this well-applauded movie today.

I knew a bit of the plot from all sorts of online posts before actually seeing it. And even though I didn't expect this, I had cried a few times during watching it.

I have always had a soft spot for movie adapted from real life story like some of the movies I once introduced in my previous blogs. They never failed to touch the deepest feeling in my heart and moved me to tears. Personally, this too is a tear-jerking movie mainly because it reminded me of my father, my childhood as well as what I have experienced in life.

The pure joy, excitement and meaning one can gain  simply from having something one passionately loves is virtually beyond description. Like in this movie, the wrestler being nationally famous himself had always desired to earn international honor for his own country-India in the field of wrestling. Even though he didn't have a son to inherit his dream, his dedication to this dream wasn't weakened by the not so positive reality. Accidentally, he found out his daughters might be good at this and then he started training his daughters to be the first female wrestlers in India. Even though they were constantly doubted and mocked by people around them, Mahavil(fabricated name based on its Chinese pronunciation) showed great determination and firmly believed in the ability of his two girls. His devotion and persistence towards his goal are not only inspiring but also admirable. This sort of quality is rare among people. But the scarcity renders it rather charming.

Nowadays, many people have dreams and are still able to dream. But few people are able to be that steadfast towards a dream or a goal. Sometimes, we give up because parents' intervention; oftentimes, we abandon our dreams because the reality isn't that promising; there are also times we basically have to give up our dreams due to our responsibility.

Many people argue that the father Mahavil was being really selfish for asking his daughters to achieve what he hadn't achieved. He sacrificed his daughters' childhood and he even went further to cut their hair to really short. Quite a few people online believe this was so unfair. I don't concur with them as I deem that considering the strong discrimination against females  in India, this is to a great extent a better way for the two daughters to lead their life. Wrestling alone has opened up many doors for them which are generally shut for other Indian females let alone the  powerful influence this will exert on the deeply embedded gender discrimination in India.

Gender discrimination exists in China as well, not as prevalent as it was before though. When I was little, my parents were advised many times by my two grandmothers to give birth to a son as every family in the village had a son and as convention believed it was better that way. But, thanks to my father's strong will, he didn't give in. He was and is quite content with two daughters. I remember one family there has five daughters in order to have a son to carry the family name. With the rapid advancement in both economy and education, Chinese people are indeed more open-minded. But we still have a long way to go in eradicating the gender discrimination as there are still numerous people prefer boys to girls even though the gender ratio in present China is apparently off balance. One of my aunts had an abortion because of the baby's gender just about 3 years ago.

Growing up as a left-behind Child, I didn't have much time with my father. In my memory, my father has never forced me to do anything not even when I was a kid. So I as a matter of fact, am quite jealous of the time the leading Characters could have with his father. Even now I don't get to have much time spent with my father. What is really a pity is that after so many years of constantly being apart, I have realized that my father and I seriously lack mutual understanding. We haven't got many opportunities to build the understanding by doing things or living together.

So even though many people don't approve Mahavil's tough love towards his daughters, I personally wish I could have had that sort of love and time with my father. But I am not blaming my father either. Nothing can be perfect, he has strived the most to support this family and to get me and my sister this far. For this, I am always grateful.

It's just very difficult to be a parent.

If a parent is very strict, children may accuse the parent for not loving them enough;

If a parent is very lenient, children may attribute their future failures to this as well.

But nobody can actually naturally master the degree of love and strictness he or she should give to the children.

Another reason why I like this movie is because the movie itself is a great exhibition for the exquisite as well as unique Indian culture. The background music, the clothes, the food and even the Indian English seem so appealing. I had tried different sorts of Indian curry before and really enjoyed the spicy flavor. So I have always wanted to travel in this country and to experience its uniqueness and richness in culture. This movie has fueled my passion regarding knowing more about India. I hope I will be able to visit that country soon; I also hope China will be able to produce quality movies like Dangal to further enrich our leisure time and more importantly to promote Chinese culture.

    I have never read the book but I have seen a movie version when I was young and I watched some if a more recent adaptation recently. In my opinion International High Schools should be banned. You think Jack would be serving the public in peacetime or turning people into monsters in war do you? In my opinion International High School students are a bunch of Piggies that believe themselves to be what you think Jack is. A class of Piggies being nurtured to act as enemies of the publics of whatever nation they claim to be from. Piggy offspring of a class of piglets that have inherited the earth apparently. It seems that every regular contributor to this forum is some piglet that works against the people of earth for some secret class of international piglets. It seems that this forum is some kind of international piglet initiative. I think it would be a good thing if a boulder was dropped on every last one of you piglets. You are pretenders. You need to hide in the shadows because deep down you all know yourselves to be worthless piglets that do not deserve your places in this world. You piglets know that you need to hide yourselves and your evil intentions from the rest of us. None of you are Jack. You are all Piggy.

    Thank you for the compliment, my friend. I do not know how many books I have read but I do know that not a day passes with me not at least browsing in some. What is more important, though, is whether any of these books have left a permanent memory. Luckily I can say that some books have done so.
