"China doesn't get the respect it deserves"
Raise your hand if you have ever heard this sentence:"China doesn't get the respect it deserves" Now raise your hand if you understand what it means. The moment I hear that sentence, that China isn't "respected", I feel confused. What does the speaker actually want? I immediately imagine those men in front of their wives, shouting "You have to respect me! I am a man! I'm your husband!" And the wife bows three times in front of them in acknowledgement. Why does China as a ...

During my first year, I bought some shelves for my room because since it's very small, I had to build up "vertically" to save horizontal space. A good friend of mine was helping me with buying things on Taobao at that time. Once he was in my room, and I showed him the places I was planning to put the shelves and boxes and stuff. "Maybe I can put something here as well, but too little space.... I don't know if I can find something that will fit. But over there it's OK, there's 32cm space" ...

Real China: Choosing my last class
If you read how China made me mad , you know that I can't choose the class which my graduation depends on. Sometimes I can't understand if people are stupid themselves, or think the one in front of them is stupid... I think this person thinks I am stupid:

Reply to "Attention more and more children going to the U.S"
"Chinese parents are naive", qingchris says in his blog post. And this is the reason there is brain migration, he suggests. The solutions he offers are: *Requiring all foreigners to speak Chinese and have knowledge of Chinese culture BEFORE coming to China. If you are different from the Chinese, please don't come here. *Another one is, strengthening the propaganda. *Another is, not calling the USA or other Western countries "developed countries" all the time, for fear that p ...

I am angry, again. But don't judge me immediately. This is what a Chinese blogger, qingchris wrote: "There is an ancient proverb for your reference: Those who knew me, said I was sad at heart. Those who did not know me, said I was seeking for something." I am sad at heart, my friends. I so much am. Which makes me frustrated. And angry as well. Those who know me know that I'm an intellectual back in my country and actually pretty much everywhere else. But in China I'm jus ...

Experiencing China
Most of my friends left already, and the rest is leaving soon. Seeing them off one after the other, I feel like a part of me has left me as well. And it makes me think more about the time when I will be the one leaving this country. Today I was with one of my best friends here, who is leaving 2 days later. We went to a touristy street to get some souvenirs. It kind of makes me sad that the communist propaganda of a near history has become a pop art commodity to attract tourists. However, ...

You're Very Good Looking!
After reading Doctors Worried by Craze for Plastic Surgery among Young People , I decided to write this post because... It can't be recent phenomenon, and I can see bigger waves coming. I'm going to post more about online shopping in China, but I have to mention one thing here. By searching for clothes online and seeing the models' photos featured on the item description, you can easily get the idea of what Chinese people think to be beautiful. I personally find it scary. 2014-8-13 22:32
It wasn't until like 2 weeks ago that I started feeling that I 100 % belong to the Western expat community in China... Why, you may ask. Why, have you started drinking alcohol again? Have you found yourself in a "lost in translation" situation? Have you been told "You don't understand China" again? No, my dear readers. None of the above. It's simply because I experienced something that I've heard ONLY foreigners and many of them go through... I used to laugh when I heard. I used to sa ...

Online shopping in China
Image from Picassomedia I only go to buy groceries and very few things outside, because online shopping is so convenient here! Even though back home you can even order McDonalds online, I had never bought anything in front of my computer before coming here, yet now I'm very reluctant to go to shops to look around so as to buy stuff. I want to give you a positive image of online shopping, but what makes me write this post is kind of negative. I just finished a 50 minute discussion with a ...

Whenever I get lost I look super-confident. Whenever I feel so scary, boring and ordinary people tell me I\'m so nice, interesting and friendly.

Hi, Maierwai. Admittedly, it is fun to read your blogs, as some of your stories about your life on exotic lands are intriguing and hilarious. However, I would also like to read about things you have experienced that would be billed as positive. Is there anything that your really appreciated when living abroad, e.g. in China, Japan, the UK and etc. I don't think that you are an overly cynical person, and you simply can't be critical of everything, right?

Sorry for the late reply. Interesting. I will remember it in my next interview. Im working as a foreign teacher in China now, teaching my mother language in university. At the interview, they asked me a question like this
"How long do you plan to teach in our university?"

    And I answered
    "At least for two years"

And they accepted me. I don't know if my answer have nothing to do with it or not, but Im just trying to be honest with them hahaha.
