A math teacher from the city of Hangzhou in east China's Zhejiang Province has become an Internet celebrity ever since the story of her 35-year-long observation of traditional blackboard writing in every lesson was shared on the Internet recently.

Liu Xiaofen became a teacher when she graduated from college in January 1982. Later, she landed a job in the School of Data Sciences in Zhejiang University of Finance & Economics.

Although the fast growth of technology has occasioned many alternative teaching methods, Liu has continued her daily classes with blackboard writing which she believes has many advantages over other modern styles in both getting her ideas across and facilitating students' understanding of linear algebra and other math courses.

Different from recently emergent multimedia instruction, the conventional method has emphasized the consistency and systematization in giving a lesson of mathematical knowledge, Liu said in a recent interview.

She continued that her adherence to traditional teaching methods is not only a test of her physical labor but also a demonstration of her accountability to her students.

Zhao Xiaoya, one of Liu's students, said that Liu's instruction is widely acceptable and easily understandable by her and many other classmates since it is conducive to helping them review what they have learnt in previous lessons whilst summing up newly acquired knowledge in the ongoing lesson.

Liu chose to downplay her instant fame on the Internet and stressed that what she has done for students comes from her fulfillment of her responsibilities and duties as a teacher.
