In Wau, a city in central South Sudan, there is simply-decorated, commercial hospital run by a Chinese couple along with just four medical staff.

Liu Guangchen, 54, used to be the director of a township hospital for a decade in his hometown, in central China's Henan Province, before he went to Africa in 2007.

At the time, he and his wife Ma Mingzhi spent all their savings and borrowed some money from their friends.

Due to a shortage of food and poor living conditions, people in the poverty-stricken region are more likely to suffer from illnesses such as malaria and rheumatism, but Liu has his solutions.

He occasionally uses acupuncture and massage as an alternative treatment method for rheumatism.

Liu said, "Wau to South Sudan is what Shanghai is to China. Our hospital is the best in the city."

Many patients who are unable to get suitable treatment go to them and regard Liu as an important member of the community.

Liu's wife said the recognition their hospital has received was mostly through the age-old power of word-of-mouth recommendation.

Villager Abdullah, 40, said, "Doctors in the hospital are nice and trustworthy." Even armies did not destroy our hospital during an invasion, Liu added.

Last April, the main police officer of the city sent soldiers to protect doctors. The couple said they had thought of leaving the land in flames.

Liu's wife said, "We used to have lots of patients who filled the halls and corridors of our hospital every day. Now we have only a dozen due to the war."

Some 20 medical colleagues who used to align with the couple have already left the city.

Back then, a patient burst into tears upon hearing the news that Liu would go away, saying, "Who will cure us if you leave?"

Finally, Liu decided to stay, saying, "In hospital, curing comes first and making money comes second."
