1. The Holy Right Hand, Budapest


This mummified right paw is thought to have belonged to King Stephen, the first Hungarian king, who died in 1038. It is kept in the Basilica of St. Stephen in Budapest.

2. The Buddha's Tooth, Kandy


The Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, Sri Lanka, houses the best known of several supposed relics of Buddha. According to legend, the tooth (a left canine) was taken from the Buddha's funeral pyre in 543BC and wars have been fought over the right to possess it and rule the island.

3. The Blood of San Gennaro, Naples


Three times a year - on September 19, December 16 and the first Sunday in May - this relic, apparently the blood of San Gennaro, is presented to local residents and pilgrims at Naples Cathedral. Pope Francis venerated the relic during a visit to the city in March 2015.

4. St Catherine's Head (and thumb), Siena


Siena Cathedral houses several relics of St Catherine - including her head and thumb. Catherine, along with St Francis of Assisi, is one of Italy's two patron saints. She died in 1380.

5. Footprint of the Prophet Muhammad, Istanbul


There are a number of relics of Muhammad in Istanbul's Topkapi Palace, including his footprint, a sword and bow, hair from his beard and a signed letter.

6. The hand of Saint Teresa de Avila, Ronda

The incorruptible left hand of Saint Teresa de Avila, which was seized by Francisco Franco in the 1930s, who kept it by his bedside until his death, is now found at the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Merced in the Andalusian town of Ronda.

7. Relic of the Holy Blood, Bruges

Colin Farrell, star of In Bruges, was thoroughly unimpressed with this relic during his visit. It is believed by some to be the blood of Christ, taken by Joseph of Arimathea, and is found in the Basilica of the Holy Blood.
