Great Chinese Students

Popularity 9Viewed 8553 times 2013-10-25 07:21 |Personal category:Education|System category:Life| Chinese

I teach a few classes at the No. 19 Middle School here in Zhengzhou. I teach in the International AP program. My students are Grades 1 and 2 high school students (the same as grades 10 and 11 in the USA). They are my 'dream students'. They are hard-working, diligent, intelligent, respectful and very well disciplined.

I teach them IELTS. We use the very excellent New Oriental books in our classes.

Recently, I gave a grade for 'effort' for each student. From my observation of their class participation and behavior (which is nearly perfect) as well as a quick review of their workbooks, every student in the class scored above 90. Effort is important in the kind of class environment that we have there. It is a practical, active participation workshop type training and teaching.

My general assessment of Chinese students (especially middle school and high school) is that most of them are model students. Some of the Chinese teachers have commented that they are even better behaved and excellent in my class than they are in their classes. I really don't know. I can only observe and evaluate them in my classes.

The true credit should go to the Chinese teacher who is their head teacher. Her English name is Anny. She does an excellent job in teaching these students. I benefit from the work that she does. She has them many more hours a day than I do. I am very grateful for her outstanding work.

This spirit of excellence should be adopted in the west. It would be difficult I know. However, it would serve other countries well to learn this quality from China and the education system here.

Yes, the serious exam system has made Chinese education go in a strange way which has wasted too much for the nation!  Our physical education program should make ordinary kids become healthier and stronger rather than prepare thousands of athletes for few champion gold medals! All subjects ought to train children to do independent thinking with their own head instead of repeating others' sayings without one-word-changing!
(A long time ago, I posted one blog (or thread)titled ‘We should learn English as kids’ .)

  • Why Foreigners Can't Teach Gaokao English 2019-7-14 23:25

"The school I work at tells me to concentrate on pronunciation and oral speaking skills only, the students will get grammar lessons from their respective State schools.  What's the use of proper pronunciation if they can't construct a correct sentence?"

This, right here, is the reason I gave up after 11 years. I could not justify punishing myself and pulling out my own hair any longer. I was tired of hearing the excuse, "This is China. We do things differently, here". Just play games, sing songs, and get them to talk (in a university environment). Foreign teachers are a laughingstock, in China. Everyone knows they are only there to put a white face on the school, and to justify charging exorbitant fees to the parents. Those who WANT to learn, will. The majority however, are only there because they HAVE to be there. If they don't pass, they don't get their Bachelor's Degree. That's the only reason they are in that classroom. Yes, this sounds like a negative post ... but it's the TRUTH.
