Have You Ever Been Depressed?

Popularity 16Viewed 14857 times 2013-10-8 07:24 |System category:Life

Recently, someone asked me if I'd ever been depressed in my life. They were surprised with my answer. I said, "Yes. I've been depressed. I spent nearly two years in bed suffering with depression. I didn't care if I lived or if I died. That's how bad it was."

I never thought that I could suffer from depression. In fact, I always thought that people who were depressed just needed to change their attitude and they wouldn't be depressed long. I felt that way, that is, until I found myself in the same position.  What was crazy about it was, I had plenty of money every month and had nothing every day. And, not having a goal every day and something to go do and be useful doing, I got depressed.

Depression often comes from lack of purpose and inactivity. We are given hands, feet, a brain, a mouth, personality and a life to go and make a difference in the world. Not everyone is going to be a famous person or do some great feats in their lives. But we all need a purpose for getting out of bed in the morning and being useful.

I got through my depression by finding ways to be useful again. I also realized that though I had no one to encourage me in my life, that 'I AM' the best encourager that 'I' can ever have. Think about it. Who do you listen to most often? You listen to the voice in your head. Your own voice. Your own thoughts.

I fought the battle inside my own mind. I said positive things about myself. This along with becoming active again, brought me out of the depression I was in. Anyone can suffer from depression. But you can take steps to get you out of depression. I did and am now living out my purpose by helping Chinese children learn English. It is a very fulfilling job. You can do the same. Find your purpose again and get active. These are vital steps to successfully dealing with depression.

I very agree with your viewpoint. In mordern china too many young people live in depress and fickleness, they live without goal, just enjoy what be gived by parents. I am a young man also, but I have my goal and fulfill it now.You can really help us to set up our correct outlook and value of life.

Depression is a serious disease and it is now a social problem. You are lucky to have step out of it. However, many people couldn't help themselves out, doctors can help very little either.

Dawn is always waiting us when we go through the
Fearful darkness, silent sometimes is the prelude of the outbreak for a volcano。

Weathered the difficult time and find out the answer for the rooted reason of the trouble, then make a meaningful, reachable goal to strive for with full strength,no mater the goal can be realized or not, life is fulfilling and full of sunshine。

Yes. For some people it is more than a battle. It is a war. Doctors can do a lot to help but they can't for everyone.

In modern life, it is difficult. But your own voice (your thoughts and the voice within your own head) is the one that you listen to most. Make sure you are saying loving and caring things to yourself. Always keep it positive.

yes, it is a positive attitude towards life, what you say translated into chinese "响应正能量" which is a popular word these days.

`Depression often comes from lack of purpose and inactivity.` There are other causes, for example, poor diet, but yes, I would agree with this statement. My advice is this: depression is something that turns and is forever turning, inwards. The antithesis to this is obvious: look OUT THERE, and get busy!

As a retired psychiatrist (and a person who has also suffered from depression), I can say that some antidepressant medications do help some depressed people. But not all. If you have depression, look it up on the web, then consult a doctor - in case you would be helped. Depressed people often feel there's no hope - so if you know one, get him/her to a doctor.

That's why we need the Employee Assistance Program (EPA) to help the emloyees to be more opitimisitc and positive.Nowadays, with the fast development of economy more and more people are suffering from depressing because of the high pressure. One of my best friends who has done some research on the EPA said that we should find out some positive goals and hold to it. e.g. If you are a teacher when your goal is helping the students to learn more konwledge, it's a positive goal and you'll fell better than who has a goal like that I want to be a teacher because the teachers there in china have moer salary and more holidays. So I'v adjusted my goal as to be a man who can improve the quality of car life or who can make the car owner's dirving experience to be better.Actually, everyday seems to be wonderful now.Thank you MichaelM.I definitely agree with you!Hope you to share more positve articles!

I agree with one phrase you mentioned, "I AM' the best encourager that 'I' can ever have" .Most of the time god bring you a temporatary friend help you idel the time away encourage your inspirts and also conquer the barries on the way. But they arent stay with your forever.
I am suffer from the depression since 5 years just gratuated from college and cant find job. I stay with my parents house cope with entire winter time. I suffer from bad colleguages relationship, suffer from hard work by supervisor and also unemployeed period. I am very sad to the life, day by day and I cant imagine what's going on when I am get old without pension to live. Life make me freak out... I feel am tiny and inviasible to change my current life as well.
With my age grow up I found only your happy emotion can help you cope with a beautiful day or overcast day. If I can find my interest point then I will continue to the job in my entire life.
So that I wont force me to do the things I do not like until find  my true interests in life.Be a happy person, that's the most important point in life. no money,we still have house to live,no job we still have hospitable relief to search, no relationship ,we could have more average friend in life.Santisfy everything you have is better than complain anything you dont have.

I am happy that this forum also provided a means for promotion of emotional well being. While each of us are different with unique triggers for happiness and feeling of well being, physiologically our body undergoes chemical changes as we age. Depression can be a result of these changes. Like many of the comments prior to mine, I share in the belief that it is our own strong will to step out of this situation and we determine the time and occasion to snap out of it.
Accomplishing a task makes one feel in control of all our faculties. Making a difference in helping others in a society gives us true fulfillment of life's calling and more importantly gave meaning to our life...imagine knowing our purpose in being that speck of sand in the universe of sand of humanity that counted.

Ture but most Chinese return to China Plus if your have not mastered English a degree from Harvard with a 75% average means nothing. Now if you end up in the top 10% of your class then by all means it is better. But really how many Chinese end up in the top 10% in any USA university? Maybe 1 out of 10,000.If you do not want to return to China then yes Harvard Degree is better.
