Why I Was Born

Popularity 14Viewed 10290 times 2013-9-12 16:11 |System category:Life| important, calendar, question, believe, reason

I had a birthday this past week. I turned 55 years old. Almost impossible for me to believe that I'm that old, but, the calendar says so. I've had ups and downs in my life. Good times and a few bad times. But, as I look back, its all turned out the best for me.

The all important question in life is, "Why are we here?" I guess the followup question is, "When we find out or at least find a reason that gives us the belief of why we are here, then, what do we do?"

I don't know the answer to such deep questions. I can only look at my life, where I am today and believe that there is a reason why my life's journey has brought me now to China and teaching English to children.

We all know the importance of teachers. They guide us in our most formative years and give us some clues of how to walk the path of life. So, I understand the importance of my job here.

Just before I started writing this, I passed one of my students in the hall of the school where I teach part time. His name is Mark. I've known him for less than 2 weeks. But, I already feel something about him.

Mark is kind of a big guy for being a 15 year old Chinese student. As I was getting to know the class, I called on every student individually to answer a question I gave them. It seemed that when I thought I'd asked every student a question, somehow, I missed asking Mark. Not just one time but at least twice.

Mark is eager to answer my questions. He wants me to ask him. He is an attentive student. Very bright eyed and alert. But, as I think about him, I wonder what's going on in his mind about his education, his future and his life. I'm not sure that he has a lot of deep thoughts about it all, but, maybe he does. I don't know. There's just something in his eyes that I see that tells me that Mark isn't just the average student.

So, I look at my own life. I'm interacting with children every day. My heart is with them and truly wants to do everything I can to make their life better. I don't know if they'll stay in China or go abroad. I just know that destiny has put me into their lives to be the most positive influence that I can be for them.

I can simplify my reason for being born. I, Michael Murphy, was put here on the earth to encourage others and do what I can to make the world a better place. I do that by teaching children. I want to teach them more than English. I know that I'm teaching them self-confidence and significance. I want to do all I can to make their life better. And, that's why I was born. To help make the lives of others better.

Behind every Great person are teachers. As I followed your blog, English may be what you are teaching but by example your English corner you teach compassion, dedication, consistency, selflessness, determination, respect for others, courtesy, common decency and enjoying life's simpler pleasure in siinging = these made the Soft Power that China seeks desperately of Chinese. Kudos from one Virgo to another.

Perhaps taking the initiative to go all the way to China to teach has brought you great blessings. It must've taken much courage.

Ture but most Chinese return to China Plus if your have not mastered English a degree from Harvard with a 75% average means nothing. Now if you end up in the top 10% of your class then by all means it is better. But really how many Chinese end up in the top 10% in any USA university? Maybe 1 out of 10,000.If you do not want to return to China then yes Harvard Degree is better.
