Actually We Belong To Time

by Wang Yifei (王怡菲), a 7th grader of Zhengzhou Middle School

Life is an one-way train journey, but it does stop for those who need it.

This might sound hard to understand, but believe me, it’s really easy and no one knows it better than we students here.

It seems as if it were only yesterday when I was going up to the stage to get my final scores and the teacher was telling all the students to have a safe and sound winter vacation. And now, another new semester has already been on for three days!

Well, as unfortunate as it can be, I still have lots of plans for my winter vacation that I didn’t really have the time to achieve. Now, I still wish that I could just sit back on one warm winter night and enjoy a fantastic book with my favorite music floating in the air. Sounds really good, doesn’t it? The truth is, I nearly froze to death when I lay myself on the couch on the balcony. Maybe that’s why I didn’t try it for the whole vacation again because there were so many sorrows in my winter vacation.

Right, here’s the first day of the school and I have to admit that I was actually a little nervous about it. Turned out that I was the only one who hadn’t finished my homework, and believe me, my parents actually helped me with some of my homework which they thought unimportant. Sounds crazy, huh, but that’s what happened. It seemed that everyone else was feeling a bit woozy about the first day of school and I am happy to be with my friends again even though beginning of the school means-----god damn running exercise.

When the teacher especially asked me how I was feeling, I put up a fake smile and said happily “I’m feeling fantastic.” You know, I’m still waiting for the person that could see through my fakeness and understand that I am not feeling fantastic at all. But right now that person hasn’t appeared yet, so yeah…. Everyone was so satisfied with me saying “I’m feeling fantastic” that it actually became an official way to answer the teachers if ever they asked you something that was weird and happened to be related to yourself. And that made me feel like a genius.

We were expecting to relax for the first few days, and you know, to just get used to the normal school life again, but school won’t even give us a chance to be happy. The first morning when we arrived at school, we were greeted with two Chinese test papers, and we had to write a passage which took two hours to finish. And then in the afternoon, we had to do a math test paper and it was so hard, I poured my heart on that one and I was only the top twenty of my class. Man, that sucks.

So, I was actually a little excited about doing the English test papers and it didn’t turned out so good, I missed three quarters of testing time and didn’t even get the time to finish. Well, that caused my scores to be extremely low and I’m feeling extremely weird since everyone though my English was good and now I was not even on top of the class. I mean, was it my fault? I didn’t even get enough time to finish.

And we are officially back to school now and somehow I am still feeling a little pity about the time floating away so quickly. The first day of my Junior One schooling was right before my eyes and before I know it, I’m already moving on to the second term. It seemed that time is always so fast and it was really hard to use every minute of life to work on the same thing since the temptations from books, movies, and others are so much. But at least we can try. If time goes by without a scent or trace, it’s a waste. Letting time go idle really, and if you wasted time, you will only be thrown away by time. I often wonder, who is the true master of this world? We often think that we can control time and that time belongs to us, but actually we belong to time. Through out the history, time has played such an important role. It pushes the history forwards into present, and it pushes the present forward to become the future. That’s how the world has been working from the very beginning. So many wars and struggles, fights and quarrels will all become blurred once the time has swept past them. So there was really no means to waste your energy and mind on those small and unimportant things that could happen to anyone.

Just focus, and come on, keep going. That is the true meaning of life.

"I was only the top twenty of my class."  "I was not even on top of my class."

I am very interested in the Chinese education system and this tells me something about it.  Nowhere is it mentioned that "I mastered this."  Judging from this blog, it appears that the Chinese education system is not focused on mastery of a subject but on doing better than others. That means that, no matter how much you master, you may be at the bottom if others have worked and mastered too.   On the other hand, if everyone is poor at a subject, then being on top of the class means nothing in terms of mastery.

This kind of competitive system will inevitably create students who are very unhappy and stressed out, in my opinion.  It does not encourage students to work together and help each other, either, because another person's success could lead to one's loss. And stress is the enemy of learning.  This also makes the learning completely about the test, and doing well on a test is not the same as actually knowing a subject.

I also don't understand how a country with communist ideals would make students compete this way instead of cooperating and working together to support everyone's collective learning.

I think this blog expresses something of the unhappiness created for students by a system that works by competition rather than cooperation and mutual support.

Thanks for your comment. Well, in order to get good grades, you have to master a piece of knowledge. Though it's rather like studying only to get good grades but since grades are playing such an important role in our life, we still take it seriously.

I wrote this passage not just merely complaining this education system, but also to discribe what students do at the beginning of a school term and how everyone is feeling about it. After all, it could be a very precious memory to remember.

I don't entirly disagree with Chinese education system because I think it is this sort of competitive enviorement that makes   us to learn more, to learn faster and to master more skills. So in some ways, Chinese Education system is somewhere between cooperation and competition.
