Catharsis. Healing. Love

I recently took an intensive filmmaking course at the New York Film Academy. It has always been my dream to turn my 3 novels into films, big or small screen. I love all forms of story-telling, and I believe from the bottom of my heart of the lessons, teachings and compassion embedded inside my novels. I write because I wanted to share some deep emotional experiences which I hope could be of help to others. It started as a therapeutic means to ease some painful experiences, and as I wrote and involved others I realized I wasn't alone.

As I sharpen my skills and learn from masters the art of story-telling, I realize the true auteurs desire the same thing. Catharsis.

Catharsis simply means a release. For the creator, and for the audience, if done right.

My 1st novel Epiphany was a collection of tragic turned candid botched love stories. I wanted readers to know they were not alone and if we could find the precious learning behind each experience and inject some humor, wit and reflections then our hurt won't be futile. Just like a dead fish if consumed whole it would mean the fish didn't die in vain. Simple philosophy. If tragedy and even death must pay us a visit, then let us do our best to ensure it wasn't done in vain but with dignity.

My 2nd novel Zhū 珠 Pearl was a tribute to my late popo and mommy. Two daughters of war turned icons of hope, in my version of the ending which I feel they actually deserved. Two Phoenix from the exotic land of Malaysia. Their conquering spirits did not die with them, it still exists in their descendants....one of them myself. Humbly. Gratefully. Willingly.

My 3rd novel Henna, La Danseuse du Cambodge was an ode to the unknown dancing Apsaras in resplendent Cambodia. Royal ballerinas of the ancient Khmer kingdom whom came into existence in the year 800s and almost entirely wiped out during the evil Khmer Rouge regime. There is beauty even in the midst of ugly massacres. Where is the beauty? The beauty lies in the spirits of the survivors and their vehement spirit in perpetuating the very same art form their unfortunate sisters died for. Again, to ensure they did not die in vain.

I will continue to create whenever new inspiration comes to mind. Or when I feel I have a compelling story to share which can be of help to others. Initially when I started this journey I worried whether I could make ends meet. I did odd jobs, downsized, cut down on certain luxuries and humbled myself to learn from those that have walked the path before me.

It wasn't always easy, still I am adjusting to it all. But as I start to feel the catharsis for myself, my cast, crew and others I feel this is my calling. My motivation is not wanting to be rich and famous. My motivation is not outdoing the competition. My motivation is simply to create artworks be it films, paintings, dance routines or songs which is true to me and from an honest intention of wanting to share, inspire and empower others.

We are all part of the bigger family on Earth. I hope I can do my part in making it a slightly happier and loving place.

Thank you again for your support.

Reduce poverty, mend and protect the environment, achieve world peace ...... all dreams that must be maintained as aims, even though they will never be achieved. Perhaps the way forward is to concentrate on smaller aims that are achievable; reducing corruption, improving education, improving communications, improving the air and water and increasing food supplies?  So much to do and so little time.

I have studied the same subject, but about Brazil. I liked the way you approach inequalities.
