The Ones in the Recesses of Concrete Jungle

Popularity 9Viewed 2678 times 2014-6-5 22:28 |System category:News

Every time I go through the rustling and hustling underpass of train station, shoe shiners are always registering themselves on my eyeballs. They remind me of the fact that there exist a group of people who struggle to survive in the concrete jungle.

The shoe shiners I see in the underpass of train station, most of whom are middle-aged women, sit on a low stool stoopedly and take pains to shine the shoes of their customers who are comfortably seated on a chair. Summer makes the crowded underpass even more like a furnace where one can hardly breathe. While the shoe shiners polish the shoes, they can’t stop wiping the sweat on their forehead. Instead of having sympathy for them, suddenly I seem to see an unusual force on them. This force, I could strongly feel, is like a blaze burning in their heart. It’s the faith of their life, whether it’s the motive to support their children to go to college or the wish to make their family live a better life, that constitutes the strong and invisible force. They may be laid-off workers who are driven to the recesses of concrete jungle. One of the reasons for this may be the increasingly advanced technology which creates numerous machines replacing manual workers. However, they don’t admit defeat and lower their head in front of Fortune. They are just the tip of the iceberg, and there are many others who are compelled to the recesses of concrete jungle. Their voice and figure are devoured in this roaring and  booming concrete jungle, but their faith upholds them to fight for life.

Its  true, one can sometimes see the toughest people with real grit, right in front of us, all around, in the most dire circumstances. It only takes an eye for detail, some thought and a heart to appreciate them. Good post!

I respect these shoe shiners for their efforts to make a living. They aren't begging, trying to tug the strings of my heart with sad faces and dirty, worn out clothes. They are friendly and no one is their master save their clients. I often make use of their services and enjoy sharing some humour with them, especially arguing over what I know is the normal price.  Take a moment and have your shoes polished, you will be helping to make their lives that little bit better plus your shoes will be gleaming.

Maybe what they do is the humblest work, but they still keep on doing in order to support their family. And I believe with the strong faith in their heart they will never be weeded out from the industrialized society.

Every time I see them, I will hold great respect for them. Life is tough to them, but they never lower their head. Although technology keeps developing, I believe they will never be replaced.

Shoe shiners, those who scrounge through trash for recycling... they are neither rich nor beautiful but they make their own way and do not beg for more. I find that admirable, don't you?

Don't Dutch people "go Dutch" ? And here's a few squibs for the resident grammarian:

The sheeps eat fishes. The poops cover the ices. The mouses prefer octopuses."

Hi ho Silver and away !

Western people rarely go Dutch. In fact, I never remember doing this my entire life. We love to entertain and often invite others for meals. Family gatherings, romantic dates, friends just meeting up and of course, we nearly always do business over a meal. I don't know which 'Western people' go Dutch, but, it is very rare in America where I come from. On the other hand, we invite others out for meals quite often and love to entertain. We love treating others just out of having a good time together with no expectation of owing favors or 'who bought last time'. We don't keep tabs on owing favors or exchange of favors.
