If I die in China: A glimpse into my bucket list

Popularity 12Viewed 5971 times 2014-4-16 18:39 |Personal category:Wish list|System category:Life| bucket list, fun places in China, fun things to do

Ok so I don’t mean to sound morbid but since I have been here I have had a few friends having to go home suddenly because they got the call every expat dreads, “I’m sorry but your so and so (insert relation or friend) has just passed away.” and it has made me think; what if the call was reversed and they (insert relation or friend back home) were the ones who got that dreaded call about me? What would I like to have achieved here? What would I like my story to be?

And maybe let’s not even think of something as final and sad as death. Let’s say after your term/stay in China for whatever reason you are here be it school/study/business/tour etc is over and you are sitting on your couch back home surrounded with friends or family narrating the tale that is ‘your stay in China’ or you are writing your report for work or updating your journal or blog; what is it that you would like to see?

Well this is a glimpse into my journal some time from now:

Ø I would like to climb the great wall: One of the eight wonders of the world and the story behind it even more wonderful than just the very sight of it. My friend, Amina said after we took a school trip there that they shouldn’t sell it as ‘you get to climb a really old wall’ because let’s face it, how many people really like hiking? Instead, the real selling point of the great wall is the view, the scenery once you are up there that makes you just want to climb higher and higher; that is where the wonder lies. Suffice to say; Been there, done that, bought the t-shirt; TWICE!

Ø I would like to do all those “T.V activities”: Ok so I may need to explain what I mean here. I mean those things that I had previously only seen people do on T.V and also those I would not do at home either because they are not available there or I just didn’t have the money and compulsion to engage in them I’ll start with those I have already done first:

§  Rode the subway

§  Ice skating, snowboarding(I have the scars to prove it)

§  Rode a roller coaster at a real amusement park

§  Went clubbing

§  Spoke/can speak Chinese: You know how people sometimes say “Speak clearly, you sound like you are speaking Chinese.” Well now that may well be true.

§  Played laser-tag

§  Played at a concert in a band: Ok it was more like just a few friends getting together and playing music but we did have a name and everything ‘Andy and the string theory’. I kind of came up with the string-theory bit because I was a “Big-bang theory”; the T.V show fanatic at the time and also we had a guitarist, violinist and me on ukulele and vocals so it just fit. Oh and it was more like a minor school event than an all out concert but they did call it a ‘gala’ so I think it counts.

Ø And here is what I hope to do:

§  Bungee jumping/sky diving/paragliding basically anything that involves jumping off high places for no good reason just for fun: let’s just say the jury is still out on whether any of these is actually going to happen even if the opportunity comes knocking on my door as I prefer my feet on the ground.

§  Find a great job and support my family: Yeah I bet you didn’t see the serious stuff coming huh. Well I’m not really a planner, I don’t have a ten-year plan mapping out where I see my life heading heck I don’t even have a weekly plan. My friends know this and it works to their advantage because am the guy you say to: “Dude let’s go to Wuhan tomorrow and just travel around for a few days!” and I’d probably be packed and ready to go in ten minutes yet I haven’t even asked where we are going to be staying or why you want to go so far. But the harsh realities of life still remain so yes I would like to get a well paying job preferably one I wouldn’t have to wear a suit (I hate suits) or one that requires me to sit in an office from 9am-5pm doing the same thing day in day out (no offence). So if China can give me that then hey am here to stay!

§  Paint balling: Yup, back to the fun stuff.

§  Write a book: I love to write. Every-time I talk about writing I feel such a rush it’s exhilarating! So I want to write stuff that would mean something, create positive impact, move people into action and all that.

§  Meet the president: Yes I too would like to know the secret to such magnanimous growth and development that China has undergone in just a few decades and when I go back home and meet my own president (which would be so easy now because how do you say NO to the girl who just had a sit-down with the president of one of the largest economies of the world?) I would have a few pointers coz man are we (Kenya) lagging behind in this whole race to first-world-ism.

§  Fall in-love (for real this time): But then again this is something we(I use ‘we’ as a generalisation) all hope for no matter where we are in the world but it would definitely be something to write home about if out of all the places, I just happened to find love in China.

And here ends the glimpse….So may I get a glimpse into yours? Pretty please?

Great list! Great verve! Keep it up! And, when you make it to Wuhan, I'll be delighted to host you. Bucket list item: white water rafting. Have you gone?

I am indeed, the prices are just a bit too steep for me however, maybe if I save up for a hundred years or so I can get there.

But then I heard virgin galactic is like a flight through the stratosphere, like you are in space, experience weightlessness but you don't get to see the world from too great a distance which is still not what I want.

Laser tag?!?! Where did you do that? I've been in Beijing for almost four years and have never heard mention of that here...if I had, I would have crossed that off my list! :)

That's true. I guess I meant that I feel very safe in China. I couldn't imagine what would kill me. I guess the most likely is a bicycle accident because my bike's brakes are broken.

I found love in China. The first one is with a Chinese girl, then a Russian girl, and the last one, my current relationship, is with a girl from Thailand. The third time's a charm, though. I hope this one will last until the end. Gonna share my stories in the blog sometimes.

Don't die too soon, please. There are still so much you haven't seen or been in China. Let me give you some suggestions for your bucket list :
1. Go to Xi'an, the most beautiful heritage city in China. See Terracotta, ride a bike atop the city wall, and taste some street snacks in the night market. I could say, you've never been to China, if you've never been to Xi'an.
2. Climbs one of the "Five Great Mountains" of China. My suggestions would be either Taishan Mt in Shandong Province or Huangshan Mt in Zhejiang Province.
3. Go to Datong in Shaanxi Province to see the Hanging Temple and the Yungang Grottoes.
4. Go to Guilin and see the beautiful scenery that was portrayed in ancient Chinese poems and paintings (I live here. Please contact me if you plan to come here one day)

There are so many beautiful places in China, one lifetime is barely enough to see them all.
Feel free to contact me or visit my blogs if you want to know more about traveling in China =)
