Communication in China plays one of the most important role. That is why a relatively short time social networks have become an integral part of Chinese society. And statistical figures clearly confirm this. Roughly half of China (513 million people) use social networking sites, and all of these networks have Chinese roots.
"Share your personal experience about social media in China and tell which social media your are using? I welcome your comment at the end of this post"
Of course, the Chinese government has its own laws makes it almost impossible to exit the local market of foreign players, and some advanced Internet users use VPN-services to access blocked social networks in China. However, even Chinese government lift this ban and allow foreign social networks to start work in China, it will make no difference and Chinese companies will not bankrupt. The reason is that local companies understand better about needs and demands of Chinese customers more better than any foreign network company.
I am writing this blog for all the newbies in China, people who are planning to visit china in future and for those who are not aware of social media in China. Today I will introduce you to five popular Chinese social networks.
1. Sina Weibo (新浪 微 博)
2. Renren (人人)
3. Pengyou (朋友 网)
4. Douban (豆瓣)
5. Wechat (微 信)

1. Sina Weibo (新浪 微 博)
In simple words i will describe Sina Weibo as the Chinese version of Twitter, Weibo plays a leading role in China's social media sphere. Chinese version of Twitter has twice the users than the Twitter. For approximately 22% of the Chinese population, Sina Weibo is the primary place to communicate.
Today Weibo is not just a place for communication and social debates, but also a way to promote their brand is becoming more business oriented. Even celebrities are using Weibo to increase their popularity graph. Stars in America are using Twitter to communicate their fan and same is the case with Weibo, Chinese stars interact through Weibo.

2. Renren (人人)
We can say that it is the Chinese Renren is simply Facebook. After a fierce competition with Kaixin (www.kaixin001.com), social network Renren emerged victorious and won the first prize. Social network Renren has more than 200 million users and serves as a platform for communication between the people of China mainly with higher education.

3. Pengyou (朋友 网)
Tencent - a real social platform for the Chinese masses, which essentially was based on the instant messaging service QQ. Having an account QQ, the user can gain access to the various services provided by Tencent company. Also having an account on QQ, the user can gain access to the Pengyou social network.
Pengyou social network has less active users, compared with Weibo and Renren. However, Tencent company managed to maintain the largest community in terms of the total number of registered users, mainly because of its different services.

4. Douban (豆瓣)
Douban is an open social networking site popular among those people who are fond of reviews on movies, music and books. Service boasts with 60 million registered users and 80 million active users per month.

5. Wechat (微 信)
There is no doubt that mobile phones have become a real battleground on Chinese social networks. This is directly linked with the increasing number of people, entering the internet via mobile devices and the rapid growth of the market of mobile devices themselves. Social Platform Wechat, formerly known as Weixin, is a mobile application with voice and text messages and much more features added time to time. Originally Wechat was hardly had a typical social network, however, the application is constantly adding new features inherent in social networks.
Currently Wechat reported more than 300 million Chinese users and over 100 million users outside of China. Mobile app Wechat translated into many popular languages.

This is a very useful summary. Its use is heavily underpinned by the almost unbelievable use of smartphones (as opposed to basic cellphones) by the netizens of China. Thus everything becomes very instant. If I compare with when I first started using FB ( I was living in US at the time) it was initially a get on laptop situation at limited times. The smartphone usage also supports a massive mobile gaming industry in China. Yes, I agree the Chinese providers know how to do it!

Good summary and explanations! I like China's strategy of ensuring vital social networks are through domestic providers. Wish more countries or blocs of countries did the same. I guess the vital steps are to integrate with local media - which now and in the future is not only for news, but also for social interaction on the same platform!

I log on to Douban in fits and starts, particularly when I'm looking for movie and book reviews. Yet I don't really trust this  website because you can run into lots of publicists or flacks blurbing their clients' books and movies on this website. The Chinese call them 水军. In fairness, this website can be useful for people casting about for some desirable books, given that this website provides some links to other  online bookstores.

I  refer to some differences between these social media in China, I'm afraid that WeChat is the most popular media because Tencet (the developer of Wechat) has more users than others company. Wechat is convinent convenient because the it has a function named "friends circle",when a user send a message,a new,a photo and so on,his friend can comment it immediately.
sencond,I think Sina WeiBo is very hot too,Renren' users is almost students.Douban is used for the those who are interested in book, music and movie. Pengyou,I don't know anymore because I have never used it
