A Buddhist nun walks out of the temple hall after the morning class, when the sun is just beginning to come up.
Zongbi is a Buddhist nun from Lanzhou, capital city of northwest China's Gansu Province. She worked as a civil servant for several years and managed a cosmetics store before deciding to become a nun a few years ago. She now lives in a temple at Wutaishan Mountain in north China's Shanxi Province. Zongbi leads a peaceful but busy life. From the time she wakes up at 3:45 in the morning to her bedtime at 9:30 at night, she has only two and a half hours to eat and rest, and spends most of her time reciting sutras and doing chores.

At 3:45 a.m., the master strikes the board, which is a signal for the temple to spring into action.

Striking the morning bell and evening drum, studying, meditating and praying are a way of life for everyone at the temple.

Zongbi and another nun enter the hall, light incense and candles, and position the religious objects to prepare for the morning class.

At 6:30 a.m., a nun strikes the bell in front of the dining hall, signaling that it is time for breakfast.

Every nunrecites Buddhist sutras before having breakfast, to express their gratitude. Their breakfast usually consists of porridge, steamed bread, and pickles.

After breakfast, all the nuns tidy up their own spaces. They believe that all their actions are a form of spiritual practice.

Zongbi washes fruits for offerings to mark Buddha Samantabhadra Bodhisattva's birthday.
